Job summary

We invite applicants for the Junior Clinical Teaching Fellow split post with Intensive Care medicine at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. The post is designed to allow part time educational activities. Any arrangement agreed will be for a maximum of approximately 4 sessions per week in medical education balanced alongside the rota pattern for intensive care medicine. This represents a unique opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge in medical education as well as providing valuable experience in the intensive care unit. It will be enjoyable, fulfilling and relevant to the future practise of any doctor. The post will allow sufficient time to explore this area in detail and develop original ideas. It will enhance professional and personal development and be flexible enough to allow independent study. The Medical Educational component of the post will be supervised by the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education and/or the Senior Medical Education Fellow and will work closely alongside a group of 4-6 clinical fellows who are employed clinically full-time in the trust.

Main duties of the job

Main duties of the job The Anaesthesia element of the post will be supervised by an Anaesthetic Consultant and will include participation in a 1:8 on call rota on the hospitals theatre on-call rota. The post would suit a trainee interested in anaesthesia, or a trainee who requires anaesthetic competencies for their parent specialty or one who has recently completed core training in anaesthetics. The appointee will work as part of the enthusiastic and dynamic anaesthesia team, which is a consultant-delivered multidisciplinary team for urgent, emergency and elective surgical procedures. The team offers fast, efficient care in anaesthesia, acute pain, maternity services and intensive care medicine. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to develop and lead on anaesthesia-based simulation, as well as the delivery of other simulation training for undergraduates and foundation trainees.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post-holder can expect to gain comprehensive experience in the assessment and management of a wide range of acute medical and surgical conditions in adults requiring resuscitation and stabilisation and patients requiring admission to intensive care. The department has 24/7 speciality doctor or registrar cover on-site; a Consultant is on-site from 8am to 9:30pm during weekdays (and then available on-call from home, to come in if necessary) and 8am to 8pm at weekends (and then available on-call from home, to come in if necessary). FY3-equivalent resident doctors in anaesthesia therefore receive close clinical support and supervision.

Previous experience of working in anaesthetics and/or intensive care is desirable but not essential as the post-holder will receive a period of induction tailored to their individual requirements and experience.

Prior experience in teaching is ideal as well as an enthusiasm for education and sound clinical skills. On the job training and mentoring in educational development will be provided.

Evaluation and monitoring of the quality of the education delivered will be a core role and opportunities for audit and original research in this area will be actively encouraged.

At any one time there are approximately 40-50 students from QMUL and ARU medical schools on placement the trust.

During times when Medical Students are not on placement at the Trust, the post holder will be expected to become involved in other aspects of Medical Education, such as teaching Foundation Doctors, and supporting the wider educational team as needed.

The successful applicant will be expected to coordinate and actively participate in the planning and delivery and evaluation of medical education to undergraduate students from Queen Mary's University London (QMUL) Medical School and Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) Medical School.

Clinical Teaching Fellows will be involved in the delivery of a wide variety of teaching including:

o Bedside teaching on wards

o Small group problem solving / tutorials

o Clinical skills teaching

o Simulation suite scenarios

o Course induction and feedback sessions

o Mock OSCE

Non-teaching activities of the post

Audit and research

In addition to these fixed educational and clinical activities outlined above, the post holder would be expected to participate in audit and evaluation of educational activities with the support of the Audit Coordinator. An active involvement in educational research and development will be encouraged and the participation and presentation of novel research will be supported.
