Job summary

We are looking for a dynamic and forward-thinking Consultant Ophthalmologist Oculoplastic Surgeon to complete a supportive team of Consultants at PAHT. The Directorate would equally welcome applications from existing and newly trained Consultants.

Main duties of the job

Main duties of the job Working with other members of the team, you will ensure the provision and delivery of a first-class Ophthalmology service to our patients. The post holder will be given the opportunity to enhance and develop their Ophthalmology skills that fit with the needs of the department. The post holder will be responsible to the Lead Consultant for the service in which they are working at any given time. There is dedicated Ophthalmology secretarial support and office space within the eye unit.

Job responsibilities

This full-time post is for an Ophthalmic Surgeon at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust (PAH). The successful candidate will join our existing team of 7 Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeons offering a comprehensive ophthalmic care service to the local population of West Essex and East & North Herts.

The appointee will be expected to offer expertise in the management of oculoplastic and cataract surgery. The appointee should have a special interest in oculoplasty. He/she will be instrumental in promoting day case surgery in keeping with the recommendations of the British Association of Day Surgery and the National Targets whilst at the same time supporting practitioners in Primary Care.

The appointee will be expected to work as a team with Orthoptists and Optometrists, contribute to junior doctor training, participate in audit and research programmes and take an active interest in the management of the speciality at The Princess Alexandra Hospital.

The appointee will work closely with the other consultants and develop efficiencies for the Oculoplastic service.

The appointee will, together with Consultant colleagues, be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive, effective and modern Ophthalmology service, practising the full remit of the specialty.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration and licence to practice
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register with a licence to practice via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview)

Desirable

  • Higher Degree MD(Res) or PhD in a field related to the speciality

Experience

Essential

  • Fellowship Oculoplastic surgery
  • Extensive experience in managing general ocular conditions, emergency surgery and competent to work without direct supervision and able to take responsibility for the care of patients with complex disorders.

Desirable

  • Relevant experience in the NHS with related subspecialty interests
  • Hands on experience with service development
  • Demonstration of knowledge of NHS management structures
  • Experience of NHS strategies / business and planning processes
