Job summary

The Cancer Team at The Princess Alexandra Hospital are looking to appoint a Band 7 Macmillan Lung Cancer Nurse Specialist on a 12 month fixed term contract. This is a unique opportunity for any nurse who has extensive experience as a senior band 6 within respiratory medicine or cancer care who wishes to expand their clinical skills and knowledge to help support and develop an expanding service which is fully patient centred. The nurse will be a highly visible presence across the speciality and wards, working to ensure the highest standards of care, setting and maintaining standards of clinical excellence and continuously improving experiences for patients, families and carers. The patient experience will be a priority for you with a strong emphasis on compassion and dignity. You will be supported by an experienced and committed management team. For this role you will need to have: A current NMC Nursing registration with post qualification, relevant experience. Possession of excellent communication, teamwork and interpersonal skills coupled with evidence of continuing professional development. In addition you will be required to demonstrate a flexible approach to work

Main duties of the job

To perform an effective key role within the MDT to deliver cancer waiting times targets and pathways communication. To act as a specialist resource for patients and the clinical team by providing comprehensive advice, information, teaching and training both within PAHT and externally. Update own clinical and specialist knowledge. Contribute in audit processes. Undertake, where appropriate, nursing research with published outcomes. Promote excellence in clinical practice, and the setting of quality standards within specialty. Active involvement in the development of the service locally and nationally. Clinical Excellence.

Job responsibilities

Princess Alexandra Hospital diagnoses over 200 new Lung Cancers a year. The role of the Macmillan Lung Cancer Nursing team is to provide a specialist service to support patients through this journey.

The post holder will work under the direction of the Macmillan Head of Nursing for Cancer to deliver a supporting nursing service for patients and their families undergoing treatment and investigation for Lung Cancer within the Princess Alexandra Trust.

The Macmillan Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist will be required:

To provide specialist, high quality, expert nursing care and support for patients and their carer’s with a Lung cancer diagnosis

To deliver evidence based individualised patient care according to patient’s changing health care needs, through holistic needs assessment (HNA).

To work autonomously and seek collaborative relationships with others across and within professional boundaries.

To develop patient pathways and be responsible for developing the nursing service

To provide expert knowledge and advice in own specialist area, ensuring maintenance of clinical excellence underpinned by evidence-based practice

To work with the Multidisciplinary team (MDT) and Cancer Management Team to ensure that your cancer service complies with the national standards for safety and quality, which are assessed through Cancer Peer Review Process and actively contribute with work plans resulting from Peer Review assessment

To act as a visible role model and expert practitioner.
