The role of the band 6 nurse in Colposcopy and Hysteroscopy is to provide clinically effective, individualised/patient centered care to those who attend the unit and their families. You will be responsible for ensuring care is delivered to the highest standards and is in accordance with evidence and national standards, working with the multidisciplinary team to achieve this. You will hold accountability for ensure that your knowledge and skills are updated in line with Trust policy. The band 6 nurse is required to show good leadership skills and participate actively in service audit and development whilst supporting and teaching junior members of staff and students.

The Colposcopy and Hysteroscopy service is a specilaist Gynaecological service which provides care to those referred with abnormal smear tests, cervical and vulval concerns as well as women referred under Faster Diagnostic Standards with suspected Gynaecological Cancers. The service provides clinical assessment and treatment in the outpatient setting, including minor operative procedures and biopsies. Some of these patients will be brought into this setting to receive their diagnosis supported the Gynaecology Oncology CNS. The service has a close working relationship with the histopathology and Oncology services as well as the Surgical nursing teams and there are opportunites to attend MDT meetings where patients are discussed as part of this role, as well as assisting the Clinical Leads with results, patient enquiries and preparing MDT lists.

The band 6 nurse is an expereinced nurse who must be able to interact confidently at all levels of nursing and midwifery as well as with the medical teams and clinical support services. The individual is expected to represent the department they work in, supporting the clinical leadership team in delivering high quality care. The post holder will work with a variety of people including:

• Director of Midwifery and Gynaecology
• Deputy Director of Midwifery and Gynaecology
• Matron for Gynaecology
• Colposcopy Lead and Lead Nurse
• Department Manager
• Wider MDT
• Clinical Nurse Specilaist for Gynae Oncology

Main duties of the job

Leading and cooridnating the unit in absence of the department manager

Set standards for the unit and ensuring high standards of nursing care are maintained at all times

Ensure all medical and emergency equipment is in a safe condition and ready for use as required

Ensure faulty equipment is reported

Ensure local standards, policies and procedures are adhered to at all times

To escalate concerns to the departmental manager and/or matron if levels of care, standards, practice or patient safety are compromised and develop appropriate actions to address these concerns

Have excellent clinical understanding and practice within the scope of their NMC registration

Provide advice and support as required to all professionals, junor colleagues, patients and their families

Promotes clinical practice that reduces risk to patients

Ensure formal and informal teaching is in place for alll staff to esnure evidence-based nursing care is delivered loclaly and across the wider organisation

To assist in setting and monitoring standards of nursing care within the Colposcopy unit

Support the manager with planing rotas and assisting in allocation of staff to meet the needs of the clinical area and the patients, considering skill mix and acuity and activity levels

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Responsible for assisting in leading and coordinating the unit

Actively support resource management

Escalate promptly and appropriately where standards of care and safety are not being met

Support clinicians in conducting outpatient operative procedures, initiaiting emergency treatment as required

Ensure all staff including temporary staff, students and medical staff receive a full induction and training when working on the unit

To be clinically competent and confident in using and cleaning the medical equipment

To act as a practice assessor if required in accordance with NMC standards

Communicate sensitive and distressing information to patients and their carers and ensure follow up support is provided

Assisting in arranging and facilitating department meetings and MDT meetings

Contribute to identifying patient safety risks and potential improvements in the department and assist in developing actions and solutions to address these

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• Leadership/Management training or willing to undertake such training
• Registered Nurse
• Degree in health-related subject

Desirable

• Msc in Advanced practice or working towards
• Non-Medical prescriber course

Experience

Essential

• 3 years or more as a Band 6
• Supervising and assessing in a clinical setting,
• Clinical audit and research
• Relevant training and experience in Gynaecology
• Experience working in Hysteroscopy services
• Significant experience collaborating as part of the MDT

Desirable

• Resource management
• Workforce planning
• Worked as clinical nurse specialist in Specialist Service
• Guideline, SOP and patient literature development
