We are seeking an enthusiastic, forward-thinking Emergency Medicine Consultant to join our dynamic and rapidly evolving Emergency Department. As a senior clinician, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high quality, patient centred care across all areas of emergency medicine. You will provide visible leadership on the shop floor, guide multidisciplinary teams, and ensure safe, timely decision making in a fast paced and environment. Main duties of the job

The Emergency Medicine Consultant will provide expert clinical leadership within a busy and diverse Emergency Department, delivering high quality assessment and management for patients presenting with a wide range of acute conditions. You will take responsibility for complex decision making, lead resuscitation and trauma care when required, and ensure safe, effective patient flow throughout the department. As a senior clinician, you will act as a visible presence on the shop floor, offering guidance and support to the multidisciplinary team while maintaining a strong focus on patient safety and timely care.

A key part of the role involves supervising and developing resident doctors, ACPs, nurses, and other clinical staff. You will contribute to their training through direct supervision, teaching sessions, simulation, and workplace based assessments, helping to foster a culture of continuous learning and professional growth. Alongside this, you will participate in the consultant rota, which includes evenings, weekends, and bank holidays, ensuring consistent senior coverage within the department.

You will also play an active role in clinical governance, contributing to incident reviews, audits, risk management, and quality improvement of the Emergency Department and be able to drive and deliver excellence in line with the Trusts vision for future. Each successful candidate is expected to work 10 programmed activities per week.

Emergency Medicine sits within the Urgent and Emergency Care (UEC) division which is led by a Divisional Medical Director (DMD) who is supported by the Divisional Director of Operations and the Divisional Director of Nursing. The successful candidates are accountable to the Medical Director. The following are considered to be the main duties and responsibilities of the post holder.

  • To provide Departmental Leadership acting as the senior in charge, including direction and supervision of other doctors and nurses and the provision of clinical advice and microteaching.
  • To advise and decide on investigations appropriate to a given situation and in assessing the significance of results.
  • To work with the shift-coordinator and site team to ensure the safe and smooth running of the Department.
  • To see, treat and discharge or refer ED patients as appropriate.
  • To run all Trauma and Cardiac Arrest Calls, or directly supervise a junior clinician running the call for Educational purposes.
  • To liaise with the Site Manager, CSG Lead, Head of Nursing, General Manager, on-call Executive/Manager and/or Consultants from other departments as necessary to raise awareness of risks to the department, and to work together to mitigate clinical risk, especially during periods of high patient volume or acuity.
  • To be responsible for the running of the Emergency Medicine SDEC.
  • To actively participate in the Clinical governance and patient safety & quality (PS&Q) activities.
  • To take part in or lead appropriate research/quality improvement projects.
  • To support the teaching, training and development of junior medical, nursing and allied health professional staff.

Qualifications

Essential

  • FRCEM or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration and hold a current licence to practise
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register in Emergency Medicine or eligibility for specialist registration in Emergency Medicine within 6 months from the time of the interview
  • Valid ATLS, ALS, APLS (EPLS or equivalent)
  • Emergency USS Level 1

Desirable

  • Instructor status in ALS/ATLS/APLS/EPLS
  • USS Level 2

Experience

Essential
