Job summary

Neurology services are based at The Princess Alexandra Hospital with outpatient clinics running onsite as well as at two community hospitals Herts and Essex Hospital in Bishop Stortford, and St Margarets Hospital in Epping.

The post holder will be expected to deliver outpatient services across all three sites, and support inpatient referrals at Princess Alexandra Hospital where indicated. Links with a number of tertiary hospitals have been established and joint appointments are established with Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Addenbrookes Hospital) and Barts Health NHS Trust. This creates excellent links for sharing experience and knowledge and developing our consultant body.

We will also facilitate access to the weekly post-graduate seminar series in the tertiary hospital to allow the candidate to benefit from CPD and integrate with the wider regional neurology team.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will demonstrate the ability to deliver professional, high quality and efficient neurology care in both inpatient and outpatient services. They will work with their colleague consultants to agreed levels of activity and throughput, working together with their Service Lead and Associate Medical Director.

The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop their own specialist interest and, depending on their expertise, to potentially deliver and develop this in conjunction with the Regional Neurosciences Centre at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge, or the Royal London Hospital. The post-holder will be expected to provide a maximum of 10 programmed activities as set out in the provisional timetable within the job description. The job plan will include clinics across hospitals within the Princess Alexandra Hospitals NHS Trust which include the Princess Alexandra Hospital (Harlow), Herts and Essex (Bishop Stortford) Hospital and St Margarets Hospital (SMH).

The post holder will also be expected to provide a consulting/review service for inpatients admitted under the Princess Alexandra Hospital DGH consultants.

The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop their own specialist interest and, depending on their expertise, to potentially deliver and develop this in conjunction with the Regional Neurosciences Centre at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, or the Royal London Hospital.

The post-holder will be expected to provide a maximum of 6 programmed activities as set out in the provisional timetable below. Scope and range

The successful candidate will join the existing establishment in delivering a broad range of general Neurology Services at PAHT, whilst at the same time supporting practitioners in primary care.

The appointee will contribute to junior doctor training, participate in research, audit programmes, and take an active interest in the management of the specialty.

Duties and responsibilities

To contribute to the provision of a comprehensive and general Neurology service. The post will serve to provide consultant advice and treatment to a variety of patients presenting with general Neurological problems (both inpatient and outpatient).

To maintain the highest clinical standards in the management of patients with neurological disease.

To share responsibility with all Consultant colleagues for providing evidence-based standards of care for all inpatients and outpatients.

Provide clinical services in line with the Trust’s clinical governance arrangements, which are designed to ensure agreed qualities and standards are achieved, and in conjunction with colleagues, contribute to clinical governance activities (including audit and quarterly governance meetings).

To maintain and promote team and multi-disciplinary working with the specialties working closely and regularly with Neurology.

To liaise effectively and on a timely basis with General Practitioners and all other health care agencies.

Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.

To develop services in your specialist area to the highest standard, according to departmental protocols and Trust guidance. The nature of the service will necessitate close liaison with the Clinical Lead and Service Manager to provide clinical input in the business planning process and assistance with the service development on a regular basis.

To actively contribute to the Neurology service and lead improvement work, in line with agreed policies or directives within the Trust.

To participate fully in the management of the department and to liaise closely with the Operational Management team, Specialty Doctors, Clinical Director and Neurology Consultant Colleagues.

Contribute to the teaching and training of junior staff and medical students attending the neurology department.

To encourage and foster the audit process at clinical, managerial, and medical levels and to take part in regional audit in support of evidence-based medicine.

Responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME) including involvement in the regular clinical meetings and post graduate activities available.

Demonstrate a willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional, or national levels.

  • MRCP or qualification of an equivalent level.
  • Success in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination if specialty training started from Aug 2007, or overseas equivalent.

  • Undergraduate or postgraduate teaching experience/ teaching qualification.
