You will be responsible for managing a 24/7 portering service, inter-site transport, postal operations, and staff across multiple locations. Main duties of the job

The Patient Services and Support Manager will be responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective provision of support services, which will meet the demands, and expectations of the service, through effective leadership and motivation of staff and the efficient deployment of resources within the department.

Job description

Job responsibilities

 

  • Lead and manage portering services across all hospital departments including A&E, Pharmacy, X-Ray, and more.
  • Will be required to complete in operational management on-call roster
  • Oversee transport services to external hospitals and over 60 clinics across Essex, North London, and Hertfordshire.
  • Ensure safe and compliant handling of sensitive and regulated items such as patient notes, pathology samples, and controlled drugs.
  • Manage postal services on-site, including staff and equipment.
  • Maintain and negotiate contracts for taxis, couriers, and leased vehicles.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory regulations and Trust policies.
  • Manage staff rosters, performance, training, and development.
  • Respond to complaints and liaise with security services to ensure site safety.
  • Monitor budgets and maintain operational records.
  • Provide effective leadership and motivation to staff, ensuring high standards of service delivery.
  • Manage the Portering Fire Team, ensuring all health and safety and training requirements are met.
  • Coordinate inter-site transport and electric vehicle operations, including insurance and claims.
  • Ensure cost-effective movement of goods and staff through contract management.
  • Maintain departmental records and ensure compliance with carriage of dangerous goods legislation.
  • Oversee staff recruitment, retention, appraisals, and disciplinary procedures.
  • Ensure staff are trained in handling specialist medical gases and waste disposal procedures.
  • Liaise with internal departments and external contractors to maintain service quality.
  • Manage equipment inventories and develop replacement programmes.
  • Participate in the on-call rota (1:7 basis) and lead team briefings and meetings.

  • Competence in Road Haulage
