The Urology service is based at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow but undertakes outpatient sessions at St. Margarets Hospital, Epping and Herts & Essex Hospital in Bishops Stortford.

Main duties of the job

For this role the successful person will need: Compassion towards patient care and be willing to support service delivery development. You have the ability to work and communicate across the Multi-Disciplinary Team, sharing knowledge and experience to strengthen core competences. You must have full GMC registration with license to practice. You can provide evidence of achievement of Foundation Competences or equivalent in surgical specialties. You have broad experience in urology and also experience of Cystoscopy, TRUS Biopsy and Prostate Follow ups. The Urology workforce at PAH has recently undergone a number of changes with Consultants bringing expertise in a number of areas such as Andrology, Female Urology, Uro-oncology and Stones. The service is being delivered by 6 Urology Consultants, 5 Trust Doctors (Registrar Level) and a team of Junior Doctors.

The duties of the CT1–2 Trust Grade Doctor are primarily based at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow, although the post holder will also be required to attend outpatient clinics at St Margaret’s Hospital in Epping and at the Herts & Essex Hospital in Bishop’s Stortford. The role is structured around a basic working week of forty hours, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday, with no on-call commitments attached to the post.

In their daily practice, the post holder will assist the Specialist Registrar in the management and treatment of all patients under their care. They will visit all patients under their responsibility each morning to review progress and will make additional visits to specific patients as requested by FY1 resident doctors or ward staff. The post holder will also be expected to participate in ward rounds and provide support to FY1 resident doctors, ensuring that patient care is delivered safely and effectively.

A key responsibility of the role is to ensure that discharge and audit forms are completed for every patient prior to leaving hospital. The post holder must also confirm that each patient is provided with a discharge summary that accurately reflects their diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up arrangements.

As part of their duties, the post holder will work within the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit, contributing to the assessment and management of patients requiring urgent but non-admitted care. They will also attend outpatient clinics and theatre lists in a supernumerary capacity, gaining valuable exposure to a wide range of clinical cases and procedures.

In addition to these responsibilities, the post holder must familiarise themselves with hospital protocols relating to the mobilisation of resources in the event of a major disaster or incident. They are expected to understand their role within the hospital’s emergency response framework and to be prepared to contribute to the safe and effective management of such situations.
