Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will work at Princess Alexandra Hospital, within the Acute Medicine Department which is part of the Urgent & Emergency Care division.
The Acute Medicine Department has recently undergone a number of changes. Currently we staff a 28 bedded Adult Assessment Unit which aims to have a length of stay of less than 24 hours. Working in partnership with this area is a 28 bedded Medical Short Stay Ward (Charnley Ward) which provides care for patients with a 72 hour short-stay in hospital. We are also responsible for a dedicated Same Day Emergency Care Unit co-located to the Emergency Department.

Job responsibilities
As a service the acute medical responsibilities comprise the following:
- Running the medical take round the clock on shift basis
- Care of the patients in Acute Medicine Units on weekdays and weekends
- Attending to patients in our Same Day Emergency Care Unit which independently sees between 50 and 60 patients per day
- Supervision of junior medical staff and undertaking regular teachings
Duties and Responsibilities
- To co-ordinate high quality person-centred care of the patients on the ward ensuring that all patients admitted have a diagnosis and treatment plan, and receive a daily medical review. To participate in outpatient clinics where required
- To provide medical leadership on the ward by supporting and supervising more junior staff and delegating duties appropriately
- To ensure the appropriate discharge of patients, including providing timely paperwork to the General Practitioner ensuring a continuation of care following discharge
- To build and maintain excellent relationships with all members of the multidisciplinary team, working with them and communicating effectively to deliver high quality patient care
- To engage fully in development of services, driving forward innovations to meet the anticipated future challenges of the ageing population
