Job summary
As the oncology/haematology deputy nurse specialist, provide paediatric haematology and oncology nursing advice to support and facilitate the delivery of high quality, innovative and individualised care to patients and their carers/relatives in collaboration with the multi professional team.
To work with the consultant paediatrician (oncology lead), lead oncology nurses and members of the multi professional team to provide education and support to the child and family from the time of diagnosis.
To liaise with health care professionals in the trust and at the primary treatment centres to provide a comprehensive patient focused service.
To provide teaching and support for medical and nursing colleagues.
Main duties of the job
To act as an effective role model and mentor to staff, demonstrating leadership, expert knowledge and high standards if clinical practice.
To assess and identify each child's/ young person's and their families' need for information, care and support through their cancer journey.
To assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care to provide a seamless service between hospital and home.
To participate in the development of protocols, working in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
To be fully aware of the targets set out in the Cancer plan and the National Service Framework for Children, Young People and Maternity Services and, in conjunction with others, utilise available resources to meet these targets.
To work closely with the Children's Community Nursing Teams in West Essex & East Herts to ensure a seamless service with effective communication.
Specific Responsibilities Clinical:
To provide information about investigations, treatment options and their implications, making referrals to other health care professionals and agencies as appropriate.
To act as a point of contact for the families of children and young people with cancer as well as for carers and other health care professionals involved in their care.
