Job summary
The role of the Nursery Nurse (NN) is to support the registered nurse in the delivery of high quality safe care of Neonatal Infants. The Nursery Nurse will be a competent individual, working as a member of the Nursing team.
The Nursery Nurse will work as a practitioner within their own right, but also work alongside the nursing team and be guided by the nurse's expertise. The Nursery Nurse will have expertise in caring for newborn babies and working with families in the neonatal period, facilitating good standards of care.
Main duties of the job
- To care for a group of neonates/babies, from their admission (where appropriate) through to their discharge and into the Community, under the supervision of a senior staff member.
- To assist in the assessment, planning and evaluation of care plans for the babies on the SCBU/NNU, ensuring that the personal beliefs, identity and preferences of parents are acknowledged.
- To follow plans of care for infants with special needs, e.g. babies who have cleft palate. He/she will provide care and empathy to these families.
- To follow specialised infant feeding care packages. He/she will make minor adjustments to the plan if necessary to meet the needs of the individual. To record and maintain fluid balance on feeding infant charts as required.
- To support the Infant feeding Co-ordinator in the promotion of breast feeding, working towards supporting the trust breast feeding policy.
- To participate in local audits and contribute towards service monitoring e.g. Key Performance Indicators/metrics.
- To assist the nurse with baby resuscitation and maintain yearly neonatal resuscitation updates.
