Job summary

For this role you will need to:

  • Have current NMC registration and post registration experience
  • Work as a skilled member of a nursing team.
  • Assist in the provision of high standards of holistic family-centred care to neonates and their families.
  • Assist in the creation of a welcoming, caring and safe environment for neonates and their families.
  • Undertake management of Unit under supervision of senior staff
  • Work in partnership with the medical staff and multidisciplinary team.
  • Provide and develop evidence based care within the Unit

Experience of working in a neonatal Environment is essential.

Main duties of the job

Providing effective, individual nursing care for the neonate

Assessing the neonate's physical, psychological and social problems and need for nursing assistance.

Acting as a role model for the newly qualified nurses.

Supervising the preparation and updating of the nursing care plans including treatment delegated by the medical staff

Integrating care and treatments from other disciplines into care plans.

Giving skilled nursing care and treatments underpinned by current research

Planning the involvement of the neonates' family, teaching and supervising techniques in preparation for the transfer home.

Teaching parents how to maintain health at home and develop parenting skills

We are one of the Local Neonatal unit within Essex. With an increasing birth rate of >4200 deliveries the Neonatal unit is flexing to meet the needs of our growing population.

Job responsibilities

Recording the patients response to nursing care planned and implemented

To provide a safe environment for the neonatal, reporting any untoward incidents and investigating to facilitate the cause optimal neonatal outcomes

Assisting the senior staff to enable effective patient care by the other qualified members of the ward team

Regularly taking charge of the unit. Using personal teaching and assessing skills and act as clinical supervisor.

Participate in the development and orientation programmes for the newly qualified nurses, nursery nurses and health care assistants

Being an assessor of student/nurses/midwives/ENB 405 students.Using counselling skills to benefit of staff, parents, relatives/carers.

Organising and participating planned teaching programmes for the ward in conjunction with the senior staff.

Participate in clinical governance cycle and Trust risk management procedures. Identifying relevant research findings to support clinical practice.

Participating in the development and testing of new equipment, materials and procedures for patient care.

Maintaining the safe custody and use of drugs.

Reporting any risks and deficiencies to health and safety and in the support services to the Clinical Manager.

Contacting as appropriate, other nurses, midwives and health care disciplines and providing written reports on request.

Preparing written summaries of nursing care and liaising with the Primary Health Care Team on discharge/transfer home.

To observe the confidentiality of patients information at all times in accordance with the Data Protection Act.

Assisting in the overall ward management and the determination of the nursing priorities.
