Asthma Clinical Nurse Specialist

The closing date is 04 May 2026

Job summary

The Paediatric Asthma Clinical Nurse Specialist is responsible for the delivery and development of specialist asthma services for children and young people across North West London.

The post holder will provide expert clinical care and leadership in line with National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance, the British Thoracic Society / Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (BTS/SIGN) asthma guidelines, and NHS England asthma standards.

Working within the paediatric respiratory multidisciplinary team, the role will support improved outcomes, reduced unwarranted variation, and high-quality, equitable asthma care.

The post holder will work autonomously, managing a specialist caseload of children and young people with asthma, including those with complex, severe, or high-risk disease. They will undertake advanced clinical assessment, develop and review personalised asthma management plans, and coordinate care across acute, community, and primary care settings.

Particular emphasis will be placed on children and young people living in areas of deprivation and other underserved populations across North West London, where asthma morbidity and avoidable hospital attendances are disproportionately high.

The role includes participation in local and national audit programmes and supporting the implementation of learning into clinical practice.

Main duties of the job

  • Conduct holistic assessments of children and young people with asthma, including clinical examination, observation, and interpretation of investigations to develop individualised evidence-based asthma management plans.
  • Manage a specialist caseload, including complex, severe and high-risk asthma patients coordinating care across acute, community, and primary care settings, including undertaking home visits and liaison with GPs, schools, and community teams.
  • Run nurse-led asthma clinics and support the running of consultant-led outpatient and inpatient asthma services.
  • Provide education and self-management support to children, young people, and their families, tailored to their developmental stage, cultural context, and individual needs.
  • Act as an expert in asthma care to nursing, medical, and allied health professional colleagues across West London Children's Healthcare promoting best practice and consistent care delivery.
