Macmillan Cancer support Worker - Haematology

Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity a cancer support worker to join the Haematology Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) teams at Imperial. You will be a valued member of the team of 10 Cancer CNSs within the specialty, supporting to deliver personalised care.

The role will support patients with cancer and those important to them throughout their care at Imperial, from diagnosis, through treatment to end of life care or living with and beyond cancer.

The ideal candidate will have experience of assessing the holistic needs of clients or patients, excellent communication skills, and a good understanding of cancer pathways. You will be expected to be a team player but also work autonomously escalating when appropriate to one of the Clinical Nurse Specialists.

It would be desirable for candidates to have experience working with those affected by cancer, performing holistic needs assessments (HNA) and specialty knowledge, however this is not essential, and training will be provided when necessary.

It is essential that candidates are committed to providing high quality compassionate care to patients both directly and indirectly; through assessments, support and care coordination. While being able to work collaboratively with the Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialists to improve the information and support available for specific groups of patients.

Main duties of the job

  • Support the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in delivering holistic, patient-centred care through needs assessments and individual care planning.
  • Coordinate patient pathways, including arranging assessments, appointments, and investigations, ensuring timely and seamless transitions between services.
  • Undertake a range of clinical observations and procedures, including vital signs monitoring, specimen collection, and basic diagnostic tests.
  • Identify and escalate safeguarding concerns, including signs of abuse or vulnerability
  • Support team working, including providing cover for colleagues when required.
  • Attend mandatory training and actively participate in team meetings and service development initiatives.
  • Uphold patient dignity, safety, and confidentiality at all times.
  • Comply with organisational policies, including incident reporting and health and safety procedures.
  • Undertake additional duties appropriate to the role as required.

Essential

  • GSCE Grades A - C in Maths and English.
  • NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent or working towards.
  • Educated to foundation degree or equivalent level of experience/knowledge

Desirable

  • Any other related training
  • Willingness and ability to undertake further education and training applicable to the role including diploma and degree level study.

Experience

  • Experience of working with cancer patients and their families
  • Experience of working with complex and sensitive issues on a day to day basis, including contact with patients who may be distressed
  • Communicating across different care settings/ care providers.
  • Experience as an HCA involved in direct patient care or relevant health or social care experience at AFC Band 3 or equivalent
