Job summary
We are looking to recruit a dedicated and compassionate Emergency Team Assistant to join our busy hospital Emergency Department. This is a vital role within the multidisciplinary team, supporting the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care in a fast-paced and often challenging environment. Working under the supervision of a registered nurse, you will assist with direct patient care and contribute to ensuring a positive patient experience.
You will be responsible for undertaking patient observations, performing clinical skills such as venepuncture, cannulation and ECGs, and escalating any concerns appropriately. You will work closely with colleagues across the department, supporting patients with their care needs while maintaining dignity, respect and professionalism at all times. The ability to remain calm under pressure and prioritise workload effectively is essential.
The ideal candidate will have recent experience working in an acute hospital setting and a clear understanding of the Emergency Team Assistant role. You should be competent in venepuncture and cannulation, and demonstrate excellent communication skills. A caring, proactive approach, alongside the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, is key.
We are looking for someone who can work in an often pressurised setting, reliable, and enthusiastic, with strong customer care skills and a commitment to Trust values.
Main duties of the job
Clinical Responsibilities
- Assist patients with activities of daily living when required maintaining their privacy and dignity at all times
- Without direct supervision, measure and record routine observations of weight, height, blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiratory rate, capillary refill and pain scores and signs of respiratory distress. Report any abnormalities and concerns.
- If using the 'Early Warning Chart' documentation, report all triggers to a Registered Nurse
- Without direct supervision, perform neurological observations, including a formal Glasgow Coma Score (GCS) and report to nurse in charge
- Measure, record and report capillary blood glucose levels of children when required
- Measure, record and report urinalysis when required, including beta HCG
- Without supervision, record ECG's and attach patients to cardiac monitors as required Perform venepuncture and cannulation following appropriate training and assessment and process samples according to local and Trust policy
Communication and organisational skills
- Ensure effective and appropriate communication with staff, patients, relatives and visitors, maintaining confidentiality at all times.
- Receive and contribute to reports on the progress of patients on the ward
- Attend staff meetings and contribute constructively towards the smooth running of the clinical area
- Ensure that patient details are entered and updated in an accurate and timely manneron the electronic information system (ICHIS).
