Job summary
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Locum Consultant in Colorectal Surgery to join our dynamic surgical team within the General and Vascular Directorate on a 6-month fixed-term basis. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a high-performing service at a pivotal time, supporting the delivery of complex colorectal care while playing a key role in maintaining high standards of patient safety and clinical excellence.

Main duties of the job
In this role, you will provide senior clinical leadership across colorectal services, contributing to cancer pathways, elective and emergency care, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Working closely with a dedicated team of consultants, nurses and allied health professionals, you will help ensure timely patient assessment, effective decision-making and the continued delivery of safe, responsive surgical care.
A key part of the role involves providing senior clinical oversight of inpatient care, including leading ward rounds, supporting complex decision-making and ensuring effective care planning for surgical patients. You will work closely with multidisciplinary colleagues to coordinate treatment pathways and deliver high-quality, patient-centred care.
You will also contribute to outpatient and cancer pathway activity, including clinic work and virtual clinics where appropriate, helping maintain efficient patient flow and timely assessments. The postholder will participate in the general surgical on-call rota, providing senior input for urgent and emergency cases.
Working collaboratively with colleagues, you will support service delivery, theatre utilisation and pathway management while maintaining high standards of clinical governance and patient safety. This role requires a skilled colorectal surgeon with strong clinical judgement, excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
