We are seeking a motivated doctor with experience inEmergency Medicine or Acute Medicineto join our Urgent and Emergency Medicine directorate as aSafety Improvement Fellow.

This fellowship offers the opportunity to work with theUEM leadership team and the Trust Safety Improvement programmeto deliver projects that improve patient safety and quality of care across a large academic NHS Trust.

The successful candidate will gain practical experience inpatient safety investigation, quality improvement methodology and system-wide safety improvement, supporting work aligned with theNHS Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF).

The fellow will work closely with theClinical Director for Urgent and Emergency Medicine and the Trust Safety Improvement team, contributing to safety investigations and improvement initiatives that directly influence frontline emergency care.

The role provides valuable experience for doctors withregistrar-level clinical experience in acute carewho are interested in developing skills inclinical leadership, patient safety and quality improvement, including experience leading improvement projects, analysing safety data and presenting work within governance forums.

Main duties of the job

Key responsibilities include:

Leading and supportingpatient safety and quality improvement projects

Analysing incident reports, governance data and safety themes to identify opportunities for improvement

Supporting the implementation of thePatient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF)

Working with multidisciplinary teams to design and deliver safety interventions

Presenting findings and recommendations at governance and quality meetings

Supporting engagement with patient safety across the resident doctor workforce

Producing reports, improvement plans and evaluation of safety initiatives

The fellow will work closely with theSafety Improvement team in the Medical Director's Office and the Urgent and Emergency Medicine leadership team, gaining exposure to Trust-level governance and improvement strategy.

This fellowship offers valuable experience for doctors considering future careers inclinical leadership, education, governance or patient safety.

Essential

  • GMC registered doctor with licence to practise
  • Minimum 5 years postgraduate clinical experience
  • MRCP / MRCEM or equivalent postgraduate qualification
  • Experience working in Emergency Medicine or Acute Medicine
  • Evidence of quality improvement and governance activity
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills

Desirable

  • Registrar-level experience in Emergency Medicine or Acute Medicine
  • Formal patient safety or quality improvement training (e.g. QI methodology, PSIRF investigation training)
  • Quality Improvement / project management qualification

Experience

  • Strong interest and involvement in patient safety and/or quality improvement
  • Proven experience in data analysis
  • Experience of improvement measurement
  • Experience of developing interventions to change professionals' behaviour
