Job summary

The Community Midwife provides holistic, evidence-based care to women and their families throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postnatal period. Working in partnership with multidisciplinary teams, the role involves assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care in line with Trust policies and NMC standards.

Responsibilities include promoting informed choice, supporting healthy lifestyles, facilitating parent education, and supervising junior staff and students.

The midwife ensures continuity of care, maintains accurate records, and contributes to clinical governance through audits and risk management. Strong leadership, communication, and clinical skills are essential to deliver safe, high-quality care within community and hospital settings.

Main duties of the job

  • The midwife is responsible and accountable for his/her own midwifery practice.
  • To work in partnership with women and their families, GP, obstetrician and other agencies to ensure optimum care.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care of mothers and babies in accordance with the Trust's policies and guidelines.
  • Strive for continuity of care and informed client choice within the limitations of the service.
  • Facilitate the learning of midwifery skills through supervision, teaching an support.
  • Actively promote and encourage a healthy lifestyle, advising and arranging support for women as required.
  • Participate in parent information groups, facilitating preparation for childbirth and the postnatal period.
