Job summary
This post is for a full-time locum cardiac surgeon on a 6-month appointment, with the potential for renewal.
Applicants who have been acting in a fully independent consultant surgeon role are preferred. Candidates should be able to demonstrate operational experience in combined surgical procedures and redo surgery.
The postholder will join a cardiothoracic team comprising five cardiac consultants and four substantive thoracic consultant colleagues.
This role will also require job plan flexibility to support service needs, including covering existing workforce gaps and contributing to waiting list reduction across the cardiac surgery service.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be expected to attend weekly general cardiac and revascularisation MDTs and provide surgical revascularisation and valve surgery on an elective, urgent and emergency basis also to attend a weekly cardiac outpatients clinic.
The post holder will join on a 1:5 on call rota to cover for cardiac emergencies and provide cardiac surgical support to the Major Trauma Centre at St. Mary's Hospital, Imperial College NHS Trust.
A consultant of the week arrangement has been introduced, covering the ward and providing pre/post-operative cover for patients while other consultants are off-site.
The new appointment will have equity within the department with well-defined clinical commitments.
