Job summary

Are you a passionate and compassionate Band 5 RMNlooking to make a real difference in the lives of patients experiencing mental health crises within an acute hospital setting? Do you have at least 6 months post registration experience working with patients with mental health needs and knowledge and experience of working with patients in an inpatient mental health setting? If so -- we would love you to join our team.

Our RMN's play a vital role in supporting patients who present to the Emergency Department or who are admitted to medical wards and require mental health care. You will be part of a dynamic, supportive and skilled mental health service working at the heart of acute care, ensuring patients receive safe, respectful and high-quality support at a time when they need it most.

As valued members of our mental health nursing team, you will use your excellent communication skills, clinical expertise and compassionate approach to provide assessment, intervention and guidance to patients, families and colleagues. With your strong knowledge of mental health diagnoses, legal frameworks and psychosocial approaches, you will contribute not only to patient care but also to shaping and improving the overall experience of mental health support across our acute hospital.

Main duties of the job

You will maintain a high standard of practice when carrying out this varied and dynamic role, including:

  • To deliver high quality, effective and person centred nursing care that is compassionate, caring, and in line with evidence based professional practice.
  • To assess care needs and develop, implement and evaluate nursing care plans without supervision
  • To undertake risk assessments and contribute to the reduction of vulnerable patients coming to harm
  • To provide clinical areas with mental health expertise
  • To act as a resource in caring for mental health patients providing enhanced care, support and advice
  • To work closely with the mental health liaison psychiatry team
  • To support the department/ward-based nursing team in the development of mental health guidance
  • To work as one of the department/ward-based nursing team in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care without direct supervision
  • To work flexibly between clinical environments on one hospital site depending on the needs of the service

Experience

  • Have an excellent understanding and experience of working with patients who have experienced psychological trauma - demonstrating trauma informed care.
  • Understand the importance of maintaining patient safety and minimising risk in accordance with Trust policy and procedure.
  • Knowledge and experience of working with patients in an inpatient mental health setting.
  • Knowledge and experience of commencing and downgrading enhanced observations to high risk patients.
  • Experience of working with patients who may be confused or present with challenging behaviour.
