Professional Development Nurse - Emergency Department

Job summary

We are seeking a passionate and experienced Band 7 Professional Development Nurse(PDN) to join our team in the Emergency Department at Charing Cross Hospital. This part time role (18.75 hours per week) is integral to maintaining high standards of clinical practice, supporting staff development, and enhancing patient safety within our busy and evolving department.

As a Professional Development Nurse, you will play a key role in ensuring safe, effective, and compassionate care by leading on clinical education, supporting adherence to national ED guidelines, and promoting continuous improvement.

You will provide mentorship, facilitate audits, support implementation of safety protocols, and contribute to operational flow during periods of high patient acuity and demand. Your expertise will help sustain staff morale, reduce clinical risk, and strengthen our commitment to excellent patient outcomes.

Main duties of the job

  • Act as a clinical expert within ones sphere of work.
  • Carry out planned care for a group of patients without direct supervision.
  • Ensure the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of evidence based, individualised patient care.
  • Assist and advice staff, both registered and unregistered in the delivery of patient care.
  • Ensure all staff maintain accurate clinical observations of the patient and act accordingly.
  • Undertake nursing procedures .
  • Have responsibility for the correct administration and custody of medicines according to Trust policy.
  • Ensure registered nurses monitor patient's progress, work towards safe and timely discharge or transfers to inpatient area for overnight observation.
  • Deal with concerns raised by patients and visitors in a proactive manner and take remedial action as necessary .
  • Act as the patients advocate.
  • Liaise with Acute dialysis team to organise dialysis treatment plan for new patients.
  • Ensure patients are followed up in outpatient clinics as per medical team instructions.
  • Escort patients to and from clinical lines room, interventional radiology x-ray when required.
  • Look after patients requiring monoclonal antibody infusion treatment and cyclophosphamide therapy.
  • Prepare patients for day-case surgery, interventional radiology, biopsy and dialysis access procedures.
  • Give advice to patients and their relatives when they call the unit with renal problems.
