Apheresis Clinical Nurse Specialist

Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for highly motivated and experienced nurse to join our team of world renowned Specialist Consultants, Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Clinical Nurse Specialists.

This role is open for an experienced paediatric or adult trained nurse with a minimum of 4 years apheresis experience who can provide visible and supportive clinical expertise and leadership to our team.

The unit is comprised of 2 treatment beds, providing a 5 day service, with occasional weekend cover and on-call service for emergency red cell exchanges. We also provide therapeutic plasma exchange and facilitate peripheral stem cell collections. Nurse specialists have a 4 day working week with hours from 0800-1800 with occasional out of hours working for emergency referrals.

The post holder will work in partnership with service users to plan, assess and manage their care using robust evidence-based clinical knowledge and skills. Clinical nurse specialists must promote a positive learning culture and act as a role model to others in the team. Additionally, post holders will be required to contribute to updating existing clinical guidelines, as well as being actively involved in quality improvement.

It is also an expectation that all staff employed who come into contact with children and young people have a duty to safeguard and promote their welfare.

Main duties of the job

  • The Band 7 Apheresis CNS is a professional, role model and expert, leading and co-ordinating paediatric Apheresis education and practice development in disease pathologies relating to Haemoglobinopathies and Apheresis procedures.
  • Be the expert in the application of apheresis procedures performed at St Mary's Hospital.
  • To be proficient in cannulation and venepuncture including with the use of ultrasound guided cannulation.
  • The Band 7 Apheresis CNS will in conjunction with clinical director, transplant programme, lead nurse for Apheresis, apheresis nursing team and quality managers, is responsible for ensuring that the service meets and maintains the requirements specified by the HTA and JACIE
  • To co-ordinate procedures within the Apheresis Service; incl. automated red cell exchanges (RbCX), therapeutic plasma exchanges (TPE), peripheral blood stem collection (PBSC), donor lymphocyte collection (DLI); and granulocyte collection ensuring expertise and a high standard of care and efficient patient pathways.
  • Provide specialist nursing advice to support and facilitate high quality, individualised care to patients /clients and relatives/carers in collaboration with the multi professional team, in line with local and national protocols.

  • RN Child/RSCN/RN Adult

Desirable

  • BSc/MSc Level education
  • Postgraduate qualification in the speciality Haematology/Oncology and Haemoglobinopathies or equivalent
  • Non-Medical prescriber certification
  • Has a recognisable leadership/management qualification or equivalent

Skills & Abilities

Essential

  • Able to take charge in an acute setting
  • Can demonstrate cannulation and venepuncture

  • Can evidence decision making and problem solving

Desirable
