This is an exciting time to join our team of 35+, dosimetrists, scientists, engineers & technicians as we are in a major equipment replacement programme with associated treatment planning developments, with the first of 2 new Radixact tomotherapy machines going in live in early 2026.

The radiotherapy service is across 2 sites; Charing Cross Hospital and Hammersmith Hospital and our equipment includes 5 TrueBeam linacs, two of which are being replaced with Radixact tomotherapy machines, a SOMATOM go.Open Pro, an Xstrahl unit and a Flexitron Brachytherapy unit.

The radiotherapy service delivers stereotactic cranial radiotherapy (SRS), on a TrueBeam STx with Exactrac and SABR for a range of sites. Planning is carried out on Raystation, Elements (SRS) and Oncentra Brachy.

The department is active with research, development and clinical trials and funds training and educational opportunities including leadership courses.

Main duties of the job

  • To design and calculate safe and accurate radiation treatment plans that achieve desirable outcomes and promote high standards of health care for our patients
  • To provide leadership and guidance to the treatment planning team within the radiation Physics Department
  • Be recognised as a clinical expert in treatment planning, developing specialist clinical practice, giving expert advice and disseminating knowledge
  • To lead and develop core expertise within the team, using high level knowledge gained through experience within the specialism
  • To coordinate the training and development of staff within the treatment planning team and to monitor performance against quality and efficiency targets
  • To contribute to the development and delivery of high quality, patient orientated radiotherapy services responding to changes in service needs and deliver

Education/ Qualifications

Essential

  • Honours degree in a relevant subject (physics, clinical technology, radiography or engineering).
  • HCPC Registration (if radiographer) or eligible for registration as a Clinical Technologist on the Register of Clinical Technologists (RCT) or AHCS
  • Appropriate post-graduate Mlevel qualification or equivalent level of specialist knowledge gained through experience plus additional training.

Desirable

  • Management/Leadership courses
  • Post graduate study in related specialist subjects

Scientific Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Advanced level experience of complex IMRT/VMAT/adaptive planning on a TPS covering a variety of treatment sites and techniques
  • Experience of planning and reporting for trials
  • Experience of leading a team.

Skills/Knowledge/ Abilities

Essential

  • Understands the risks associated with radiation and the optimisation of patients treatments
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of standard and non-standard complex and conformal techniques
  • Thorough understanding of ICRU guidance and IR(ME)R and application in treatment planning
  • Knowledge of current professional issues

Essential

  • Must be able to communicate effectively when relating complex, technical concepts and advice.
