Job summary

Main duties of the job

The Senior Medical Laboratory Assistant is responsible for the accurate and timely processing of patient specimens for biomedical testing. This includes specimen reception duties, data entry, equipment operation, and supporting quality management systems. The postholder will lead a team of MLAs in designated areas, ensuring efficient workflow and adherence to SOPs, while also contributing to training and continuous improvement initiatives.

Job responsibilities

This role is vital for delivering high-quality, timely diagnostic and monitoring services

essential for patient care at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, The Hillingdon HospitalsTrust, and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. The postholder will collaborate effectively with team members to ensure seamless operations and uphold our commitment to excellence inpatient care.

As an MLA the post holder will have some knowledge of biomedical procedures and isresponsible for processing patient specimens for biomedical testing and maintaining allrecords involved in the diagnostic pathway after receiving appropriate training and ability todemonstrate competence. This includes receiving, sorting, labelling, and preparingspecimens, resolving issues such as mislabelled or missing samples, performing receptionduties, data entry, dealing with telephone enquiries and relaying test results to clinicians and Expert Patient focused Caring Collaborative other healthcare workers, performing general housekeeping duties. Depending oncompetency assessment the post holder may be required to operate specialist laboratoryequipment.

The post holder will provide support for and assist with the induction and training of newentrant medical laboratory staff and support with Q-pulse and the laboratory qualitymanagement system where appropriate. The post holder will be guided by standardoperating procedures (SOPs) but also propose improved ways of working to the workingarea or laboratory section. The post holder will deal with routine enquiries and know whento seek advice or when to refer non-routine matters to a manager.

Contribute to the efficient and effective running of department and sections asappropriate.

To be responsible for personal ongoing training as required, ensuring skills/competencies are maintained.

To maintain the highest level of service at all times.

  • NVQ 3 in clinical laboratory support or equivalent
  • Completion of a medical laboratory assistant competency portfolio or
  • evidence of laboratory working and competency
