Senior Clinical Fellow (ST4+ Equivalent) in Anaesthetics

Job summary

This is a Senior Clinical Fellow (ST4+ Equivalent) post in Anaesthesia. It is based at the Hammersmith Hospital and commences in February 2026 for six months in the first instance but extendable to one year, subject to satisfactory assessments. A minimum of 21 months of anaesthetic experience is required.

The post includes opportunities to gain experience in perioperative medicine, general and regional anaesthesia, intensive care, resuscitation & transfer and pain management. The hospital does not provide paediatric services. Depending upon the interests of the applicant there may also be the opportunity to participate in the increasing academic work being undertaken by the department.

Hammersmith Hospital is home to the West London Renal and Transplant Centre, has large cancer treatment centres (oesophago-gastric, hepatobiliary and gynae-oncology) and a specialist cardiac service with a 24/7 primary angioplasty centre, cardiac surgery and intensive care. In addition, it covers a broad range of other surgical specialities including endocrine, urology, obstetrics and infertility. Hammersmith Hospital is famous for its research achievements and has a large community of Imperial College London postgraduate medical students and researchers.

Main duties of the job

Theatre list allocations will allow the post holder to experience all of the anaesthetic subspecialties on offer at the Hammersmith Hospital under direct consultant supervision. Almost all Hammersmith operating lists are designated consultant-delivered training lists.

In addition to elective theatre work, the post holder will cover the registrar rota for theatres when on call. The rota follows a full shift pattern with prospective cover, and is compliant with the European Working Time Directive and the 2016 junior doctor contract.

Teaching Activities:Teaching takes place weekly, both face to face in the anaesthetic department and via MS Teams. Teaching has a cardiac focus but also covers the full range of clinical work encountered at the Hammersmith Hospital as well as topics covering the FRCA examination syllabus. Teaching is consultant-supervised and both consultant- and trainee-delivered.

There is also a monthly journal club.

Research

Our clinical department, include APMIC, includes several research-active clinicians who are conducting experimental studies and are also Chief / Co-Investigators of large, multicenter trials across basic, translational, and clinical realms, covering topics such as anaesthesia for major general surgery, perioperative multi-organ failure, postoperative pulmonary complications, acute kidney injury, patient blood management and sepsis
