Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated registered Nurse in Ophthalmology to join our team at Western Eye Hospital, part of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner in ED ophthalmology. We are a progressive, growing department, and are looking for an individual to work in our emergency department/emergency clinics.

Western Eye Hospital is a busy hospital with an equally busy eye casualty. The emergency department feeds directly in to the outpatient clinics by administering immediate treatment and then referring onwards appropriately.

You will work within a multidisciplinary team, consisting of consultants, ophthalmic trainee doctors, Advanced Clinical Practitioners, nurses, optometrists and orthoptists. The role will consist of sessions A&E, Emergency Hot Clinics, urgent PCC clinics, Corneal Clinics, Minor lid and Cross Linking lists. Oculoplastics and Botox clinics.

The successful candidate must also hold the Independent Nurse Prescribing. Please see JD for essential requirements for the post.

Main duties of the job

  • Practices as an ACP in the diagnosis and management of own ED Patients
  • Provides expert advice on issues relating to ED Patients.
  • Conduct oneself in accordance with the NMC Code Professional conduct, National and trust guidelines /policies.
  • Exercise a degree of personal professional autonomy as an ACP in ED Ophthalmology
  • Demonstrate appropriate practice and specialist advice in the assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation and discharge of patient care. This includes history taking, physical examination and the requesting of agreed diagnostic procedures/clinical investigations.
  • Responsible to assess, manage, investigate and discharge patients independently using appropriate equipment including slit lamp, Tonometry, diagnostic equipment, and manage patients through their pathway according to trust and local protocols and consulting with senior clinicians as necessary.
  • Able to undertake, interpret and act on investigations such as Bloods, x-rays, etc.
  • Able to undertake or be trained to undertake Minor-lid surgery and Cross linking as well as being able to assess pre and post procedure and work closely with medical team to plan further management.
  • Undertake Botulinum Toxin injections and under the oculoplastics team.
