Job summary
AIM OF THE ROLE:
To be an
efficient flexible member of the Cellular
Pathology laboratory providing a high quality service to Imperial
College Healthcare Trust.
To
maintain the required levels of laboratory safety and good laboratory practice,
as specified in local and national guidelines.
To work
with biomedical scientists and clinical scientists in the provision of a
comprehensive and effective Cellular Pathology service
for the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, as directed by the Head of the
Department.
To participate in the efficient
handling, processing and analysis of samples in the laboratory, under
supervision.
To
maintain effective records of all activities and procedures, and to contribute
towards the maintenance of the laboratory's quality system.
To
check, keep clean and maintain laboratory equipment.
To carry out supervised laboratory
procedures in all sections of the laboratory, as directed by the Head of the
Unit and senior scientific staff.
To undergo appropriate teaching and
training as directed and as necessary in order to maintain HPC registration
and to maintain suitable records of all
training activities undertaken.
Main duties of the job
1.
Contributes to providing a professional
clinical laboratory service, working effectively as a team member as part of
the overall department.
2.
Able to perform all core scientific and
interpretive work, which corresponds to the training and qualifications of a
Registered Healthcare Scientist.
3. Develop
and improve your professional expertise.
4. More
experienced Healthcare Scientists will be expected to supervise unqualified
staff and deputise for section leaders when necessary.
5.
Provides specialist clinical technical
services to patients that may include research and audit.

The postholder will demonstrate politeness, courtesy, and sensitivity in all interactions, promoting a positive image of the Trust and contributing to the sharing of good practice. They will work cohesively with team members to deliver excellent services, participate in departmental meetings, and ensure effective communication. They will provide and receive complex information, including advice and instructions, and promptly report any incidents, difficulties, or concerns to senior staff.
They will attain proficiency in designated diagnostic areas and deliver appropriate services, working autonomously within their scope and referring when necessary. The role requires effective workload management, adherence to safe working practices and SOPs, and support for internal and external quality assurance processes. The postholder will validate and authorize reports as per local policy, ensure accurate documentation, and comply with Trust standards. They will identify and report risks in line with Trust policy.
The postholder will actively implement and reinforce Trust policies and procedures, engage in personal and professional development through the Trusts review systems, and record and report incidents or complaints while assisting in investigations. They will support accreditation and inspection processes for regulatory bodies such as UKAS, MHRA, HTA, and EFI.
They will assist in maintaining stock levels and managing resources, contribute to the evaluation and development of techniques, and maintain and calibrate equipment when working independently.
The role includes supporting the training and supervision of staff, assisting in team planning and coordination, and adhering to core Trust policies including sickness, leave, and health and safety. The postholder will participate in one-to-one meetings, PDP development, and staff appraisals, fostering a collaborative team environment and sharing knowledge.
The postholder must hold a Specialist Diploma or equivalent in the relevant discipline, undertake training to acquire and maintain core competencies, maintain HPC registration and a CPD portfolio, and continuously develop scientific expertise.
They will undertake training for electronic systems and maintain an active email account. They will accurately enter patient data and test results into the laboratory system and collect audit and research data as required.
The postholder will operate independently within clinical and professional guidelines, seeking support when needed. They may be required to perform any other duties commensurate with the grade as requested.
