Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust

Consultant Acute and Respiratory Medicine

The closing date is 03 September 2025

Job summary

This is a substantive post created to meet the demand in increased activity linked with the rolling out of the North West London Lung Cancer Screening Program. The post-holder will contribute to the lung cancer services across Imperial, including St Mary's Hospital (SMH) and Charing Cross hospital (CXH) site.

The post-holder will also contribute to the acute medical take at SMH and provide respiratory outreach to the acute medical unit there.

This post therefore represents an opportunity to deliver excellent care to patients with respiratory disease, lung cancer and pleural disease, in a specialist centre, supported by well-established multi-disciplinary teams and would be suitable for a post-CCT candidate looking to develop as a consultant in a supportive team in a large organisation.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role include supporting the lung cancer service. We diagnose approximately 280 new cases of lung cancer a year at ICHT, as well as being a tertiary referral center for oncology and cardiothoracic surgery. Our performance/outcome measures are reliably above national standards and amongst the best in our local alliance. The service is run in line with the NOLCP pathway and we reliably meet our 28 day FDS. We have excellent 62 day treatment target rates and are working towards aiming for a 49 day pathway. We run a robust and well recognized nodule service.

The role will also have an involvement in the intervention service. There are bronchoscopy lists weekly at CXH, twice weekly at HH and 4 days a week at SMH. The post-holder will contribute to the bronchoscopy, including EBUS service at SMH. We have an established EBUS service at SMH (performing over 300 cases per year).

This post-holder will support acute medicine on the SMH site, which delivers a consultant-led service for all patients admitted under Acute Medicine 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, meeting the national standards for the provision of acute medical services and the 2013 London Quality standards. All clinics and elective procedures are cancelled during acute medicine commitments.
