Job summary

This post is a 9 fixed clinical session, 37.5 hours, within Glaucoma and Accident and Emergency department in Ophthalmology at Imperial College. The applicant could be employed to work at The Western Eye Hospital, Marylebone Road, London NW1 5YE or Charing Cross Hospital, Fulham Palace Road, London W6.

Main duties of the job

The Glaucoma Service at Western Eye Hospital is a specialist unit within Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, dedicated to delivering high-quality care for patients with glaucoma and related eye conditions. As a leading provider in London, we offer a full spectrum of services, including advanced diagnostics, laser treatments, and complex glaucoma surgery.

Our team consists of consultant ophthalmologists, specialist nurses, optometrists, orthoptists, and administrative staff who work collaboratively to ensure excellent patient care. We manage a high-volume service, seeing thousands of patients annually, with a strong focus on early detection, treatment, and long-term management to prevent vision loss.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  1. Provide High Quality Care to Patients in Ophthalmology
  • The post holder must be medically qualified and maintain GMC specialist registration.
  • To develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.
  • To ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities.
  • To ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views.
  1. Research, Teaching and Training
  • To provide high quality teaching to medical undergraduates and members of other health care professions as required by the Clinical Director/Chief of Service.
  • Attend and participate in the West London weekly post-graduate ophthalmic teaching by organizing and chairing an allocated session 2-3 times a year.
  • The selected candidate will also be expected to be involved in three medical retina research projects.
  1. Performance Management
  • To work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in the following areas:

o to ensure NICE guideline for Anti-VGF injection is strictly adhered to

o to manage efficiently application of individual funding request

o to participate in auditing clinical service

  1. Governance
  • To review clinical outcomes in designated area using external benchmarking data where appropriate to identify and advise variances to the Clinical Director/Chief of Service.
  • Participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis and to ensure resulting actions are implemented.
  • To ensure clinical guidelines and protocols are adhered to by junior medical staff and updated on a regular basis.
  • To keep fully informed about best practice in the specialty areas and ensure implications for practice changes are discussed with the Clinical Director/ Chief of Service
  1. Leadership and Team Working
  • To demonstrate excellent leadership skills with regard to individual performance, clinical teams, the Trust and when participating in national initiatives
  • To work collaboratively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and Imperial College as required.
  • Adhere to Trust/departmental guidelines on leave including reporting absence.
