Job summary
The Imperial Memory Unit (IMU) has been running clinical trials for over ten years, focusing on disease modifying treatment trials in early Alzheimer's disease but also including observations studies and trials of advanced diagnostics.
The Clinical Research Nurse post holder will be responsible for coordinating clinical trials relating to dementia and the post holder will be responsible for preparing/delivering clinical trial medication. The Alzheimer's Clinical Trials medications at IMU are predominantly delivered by intravenous infusions; therefore, it is a requirement that the post holder is IV competent. The post holder will act as a blinded nurse and un-blinded nurse for specific studies taking place at the imperial memory research unit.
Other responsibilities will include helping in the recruitment of patients, coordination of patients participating in clinical research, collection of research data and carrying out clinical observations relevant to the study protocol. It is desirable that the post holder has experience in using clinical rating scales in Alzheimer's disease (e.g. MMSE, CDR, ADAS-Cog) or are willing to be trained on neuropsychological assessments. They will also be expected to develop skills and knowledge relating to the conduct of clinical research.
The majority of time will be spent in a hospital research clinic setting. The post holder will facilitate high standards of nursing care and work closely with the other departments in the hospital such as pharmacy, Imaging and other research teams.
Main duties of the job
- Identifies potential patients for clinical research.
- Determines eligibility of potential patients.
- Ensures all pre-study tests are undertaken and results obtained.
- Acts as patients advocate in obtaining informed consent in the first instance and as the trial progresses/unfolds.
- Provides written and verbal information to patients and families on the concept of clinical research and detailed education regarding the objectives, scientific rationale, treatment, Investigations and follow-up for specific clinical research projects.
- Provides direct patient care within the expanded role of clinical trials (e.g. advanced history taking).
- Systematically documents patient information in the medical notes.
