Job summary

The Macmillan Cancer Information Support Worker is a vital role based within an established Macmillan Information and Support team, contributing to the provision of cancer information and support to those affected by cancer. The postholder will support the Macmillan Information and Support Specialist (MISS), Macmillan Information and Support Facilitator (MISF) and the Macmillan Patient Information and Support Service Manager (MPISSM) with the delivery of information and support.

While working alongside the established support team in the Macmillan centre, info-pod and within the virtual service, the role will have a specific focus on delivering the elements of personalised care. They will additionally co-ordinate the development of cancer information alongside the MISS and the MPISSM.

The role sits within the Macmillan Patient Information and Support team. This team is made up of a staff and volunteers working within; the Macmillan Centre at Charing Cross, the Macmillan Infopod at Hammersmith, the Macmillan Welfare Service, the Macmillan Cancer Navigator Service and the Open Access Follow Up (OAFU) service. These services provide patients with a mixture of remote monitoring, face to face and telephone support, including financial, emotional and practical support.

Main duties of the job

Operational responsibilities

  • To demonstrate specialist skills and knowledge in providing expert cancer information and support covering the entire range of cancers, treatments, psychological and emotional issues, and financial matters.
  • Able to assess and identify complex needs of individual clients, and devise support interventions and programmes to meet these needs, in partnership with clients, carers and colleagues.
  • To attend internal and external patient information and support related steering groups and meetings as appropriate.
  • To co-ordinate and maintain a database of cancer patient information undergoing review and in circulation.
  • To support the MISS and MPISSM with the management and delivery of the patient information and support panel.
  • To perform holistic needs assessments and deliver health and wellbeing interventions in collaboration with the clinical nurse specialists.
  • To support the MISS and the MISF with the delivery of support and peer groups, whether virtual or face to face.
