Job summary
Imperial College Health Care NHS Trust is the largest provider of breast services in north-west London. The breast surgery department sees approximately 21,000 outpatients and undertakes 900 surgical procedures a year. The department provides a broad range of services including daily rapid diagnostic clinics, a comprehensive surgical service which offers the full range of reconstructive options, and a well-established family history clinic. It is an essential service for patients referred from local primary care services as well as the Trust-hosted West of London Breast Screening Service.
The department is based at Charing Cross Hospital. Some outpatient clinics run at St Mary's Hospital. The department provides a broad range of services including daily rapid diagnostic clinics, a comprehensive surgical service which offers the full range of reconstructive options, and a well-established family history clinic. It is an essential service for patients referred from local primary care services as well as the Trust-hosted West of London Breast Screening Service.
The department is staffed by a multi-disciplinary team with a mix of clinical experience and expertise. There are five breast surgeons, one non-operating consultant, one specialist grade doctor, one specialty doctor, plus 14 consultant radiologists. The doctors are supported by a team of breast care nurses, plus radiographers and health care assistants. There is also a dedicated team of administrative and clerical staff.
Main duties of the job
The Breast Surgery Department is looking to appoint a full-time (10 PA) Specialist Grade Doctor on a substantive contract, to start mid-2024. The post will be based at Charing Cross Hospital with some activity at St Mary's Hospital. The post-holder will play a key role in ensuring the department achieves the 28-day Faster Diagnostic Standard and the 62-day treatment target for patients referred with suspected cancer. The post-holder will lead the family history service. They will have regular theatre lists for patients requiring mastectomy prior to autologous reconstruction and provide flexible cover for the breast surgery theatre lists. There is no on-call commitment with this post.
