Job summary

A unique opportunity has arisen to join our established and dynamic Chemotherapy Nursing team on our newly refurbished day unit. Our service delivers

  • An innovative nurse-led chemotherapy service. You will work closely with the nurse practitioners who run their clinics from the day unit.
  • We are passionate about patient and staff safety and were the first Trust to use the Pactosafe SACT disposal system.
  • We engage collaboratively across the Trust and at a National level. We are working closely with Macmillan on the Value Based Standards programme and have seen extremely positive results for both staff and patients.
  • The oncology services are CHKS accredited demonstrating a high quality service for our patients.

Main duties of the job

To work accordingly to the Nursing And Midwifery Code of Professional Conduct and relevant professional guidelines and as a named nurse for a defined group of patients and take responsibility for:

  • Providing positive clinical leadership, working collaboratively with the senior nurse team to promote high standards of care specialist nursing care and support, deputizing for their line manager within their speciality.
  • Being flexible in the approach to the clinical area, acting as a professional role model providing direct and indirect clinical care, teaching and research.
  • To provide an expert level of professional practice within the field of oncology nursing, by keeping oneself up to date in issues related to specialty, developing, maintaining and utilising specialist skills and knowledge, including completing mandatory/annual training updates.
  • To actively support the Ward Manager, assisting in the safe, effective and efficient management of the ward and deputising for the Ward Manager in their absence.
  • To promote a clinical environment that is conducive to learning, supporting and participating in the supervision/teaching of more junior and/or new staff, both nursing and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Contribute to the development of services and quality improvement initiatives within a collaborative framework to enhance patient experience and to ensure standards of care are maintained at the highest level.

  • To assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care, providing specialist advice and actively seeking evidence based practice which will improve the quality of care and meet the needs of a delegated group of patients. A holistic approach to caring should be planned that will include the appropriate level of physiological, pathological, spiritual, socio-economic and cultural aspects which influence the care of clients within your specific speciality.
