Job summary

We are excited to offer this unique new band 6 role within our paediatric service to support with the care and management of children within our service presenting with mental health needs. You will work alongside a small team playing a crucial role in coordinating the appropriate care for these children and young people including;

Identifying children in need of psychiatric assessment and treatment, supporting and assisting paediatric nurses in the management of disruptive behaviour, emotional distress and somatisation as well as being a voice for the children and young people in hospital. You will be responsible for supporting the training and provision of RMN nurses to achieve the standards set by paediatric ICHT services.

Main duties of the job

  • To be a professional role model, leading and co-ordinating the management of children and young people (CYP) with mental health needs
  • To liaise with the ward team to ensure the training and provision of RMN nurses achieve the standards set by paediatric ICHT services
  • To provide advice and support to paediatric nurses and other MDT members on the management of children with mental health problems/ disabilities and long term health problems on the wards
  • To identify children with combined paediatric, psychiatric illnesses and ensure that they receive appropriate treatment
  • At all times ensure that the needs of the patient are placed at the centre of care delivery.

EDUCATION

Essential

  • RSCN/RN Child RMN on live register
  • Mentorship in Practice or equivalent
  • Evidence of continuing professional development and short courses
  • Level 3 safeguarding

Desirable

  • Management course
  • Child Mental Health course

SKILLS/ABILITIES

Essential

  • A comprehensive understanding of the Mental Health Act (1983), the Mental Health Code of Practice, the Mental Capacity Act (2005), and the CPA process.
  • Specialist knowledge of Paediatric mental health problems and their relationship to physical disorders.
  • A comprehensive understanding of the risk assessment process (including deliberate self-harm).
  • Able to build constructive relationships using warmth and empathy to patients and families.
  • Excellent communication skills

EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Minimum of 12 months at pay band 6 within the relevant speciality.
  • Experience working in paediatric mental health role.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
