Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Ophthalmology department at imperial college healthcare trust for a substantive consultant to support the cornea and high volume cataract and emergency services.
This post is based in the Ophthalmology directorate across Charing cross and Western eye hospital sites and the post holder will work with current body of ophthalmology consultants. The department is very busy, seeing over 6000 patient a year in the corneal service.
The service offers high quality corneal and cataract treatment as well as emergency care and the successful post holder will also oversee the training of senior ophthalmology trainees who are suitable to be assigned to support these sessions.
There is a very active research unit: ICORG (Imperial College Ophthalmic Group) which is a part of Imperial College's department of Cancer and Surgery and the team are actively participating in a number of phase 1 to phase 4 trials including surgical trials. The successful candidate will provide cornea clinics, a regular theatre list and will have a regular ED session.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work across ophthalmology services.
Main duties for the role will be:
- Outpatient clinics in Cornea
- Theatre sessions to include high volume cataract and cornea
- Take part in consultant on call rota
- Emergency department sessions
The WEH ophthalmic emergency department sees approximately 150 patients per day with inpatient care available for those patients who need admission. The department is staffed with North West London Deanery junior and senior trainees, staff grades, associate specialists and nurse practitioners. The successful candidate will be expected to train and mentor all members of the team. The department is also supported by an on-call consultant from the North West London hospitals rota and access to all ophthalmic sub specialty expertise is assured.

The high volume cataract service at CXH (>8 suitable cataract cases per list) offers high quality rapid access cataract surgery and the successful post holder will also oversee the training of senior ophthalmology Trainees who are suitable to be assigned to support this list. They will also support the development of the non medical led pathway for non-complex post operative review.
The successful candidate will have the equivalent of 1 cornea / cataract list per week plus a 1 in 4 all day Saturday theatre list with cornea, cataract / general clinics to support the activity.

THE OPHTHALMOLOGY SERVICE
A full ophthalmology service is provided at the Western Eye Hospital and at Charing Cross Hospital with some additional research and paediatric clinics at Hammersmith Hospital and St Marys Hospital.
Out-Patients:
At Charing Cross, all clinics take place on the first floor outpatient area in the Main Outpatients department.
At the Western Eye Hospital there are clinics covering all the sub-specialist areas of ophthalmology as well as general clinics for rapid access to the hospital eye service.
On both Sites there are YAG and Argon lasers, digital fluorescein fundus photography, ocular coherence tomography, corneal topography, plain digital photography, anterior segment photography, IOL Master and Lenstar biometry, minor lid procedures, nasal endoscopy and EMG for botulinum toxin administration are available within the clinic areas.
Eye Surgery
At the Western Eye cataract, glaucoma, retinal, strabismus, corneal, oculoplastic and lacrimal surgery takes place in a two theatre suite on the 4th Floor and in the minor procedures theatre on the ground floor and in the macular degeneration treatment Unit in the basement. There are dedicated General Anaesthetic Operating sessions covered by Consultant Anaesthetists who provide peribulbar and sub-tenons or general anaesthesia as required. Approximately 2500 cataracts, 500 lid, lacrimal and orbital cases and 2800 other procedures go through Imperial College Ophthalmic Theatres per year.

The in-patient beds for Imperial College ophthalmology are at the Western Eye Hospital on Alex Cross Ward.
Eye Casualty service for Imperial College:
The Emergency Eye service, in the form of daily Emergency eye clinics at CX and a 24 hour casualty at Western Eye takes emergencies from all over London, especially West London. Both sites receive referrals from the main Charing Cross and Hammersmith Hospital and St Marys A & E Departments, GPs, Optometrists and from within the Trust.
Night and week-end emergency cover is provided at the Western Eye Hospital, from Alex Cross ward which is staffed 7 days a week. Resident junior cover is available there and Consultant cover is provided by the West London ophthalmology consultants.
