Job summary

The Directorate of Specialist Surgery is seeking a talented individual with multiple skills and an appetite for delivering a first class nursing service to join our team on the Charing Cross Hospital Site. The successful candidate will lead nursing and drive the quality and safety agendas on the ward, which is home to our multi-specialty elective surgical hub. This is a key nursing role carrying a high level of responsibility and workload, but with great opportunity. You will need experience of working at managerial level with demonstrable outcomes in advancing surgical nursing practice and in improving patient experience and patient care. A strong understanding of quality and safety in healthcare is essential. Included in the portfolio is a responsibility to provide senior quality and safety to our Breast and Audiology services

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be a member of the Directorate senior nursing leadership team. You will be one of four clinical Matrons leading the nursing agenda under the guidance of the lead nurse across specialist surgery.

  • To be responsible for the professional leadership of the Riverside Ward nursing team, demonstrating a supportive and flexible approach and a proactive, responsible attitude so as to promote confidence in the team and the service.
  • To provide senior clinical leadership underpinning the quality and safety agenda on Riverside, Brest Services and Audiology
  • To act as a clinical expert whilst also reviewing current practice, identifying areas for development, and planning the appropriate change using research and experience to evaluate the outcomes.
  • To lead on the development of the senior nursing team on Riverside to ensure consistent high standards of practice and to raise the profile of nursing across all aspects of the service.
  • To be responsible for the quality of the patient's environment in order to sustain excellent patient experience.
  • To co-ordinate practice for multiple clinical areas.
  • To ensure a high standard of financially effective care delivery across defined clinical areas.

  • To maintain clinical credibility by acting regularly as a clinical practitioner in own area of expertise.
  • To be highly visible, accessible and approachable to staff, patients and the public to ensure that open and honest communication channels are created and sustained.
  • To maintain an overview of the standards of care being delivered across Riverside Wartd and instigate remedial action if necessary.
  • To work with the Clinical Practice Educator in assessing the clinical skills required to deliver a safe and high quality service, identifying any deficits in this and developing programmes to address these issues.
  • To ensure that the Riverside Ward nursing team has access to a procedural clinical competency framework to ensure that safe practice is assured.
  • To act as a resource for junior staff. To guide and support developmental projects and advise on further resources inside and outside the Trust as appropriate.

  • To maintain a high clinical profile through a daily walk around of all clinical areas and lead regular quality department rounds.

Management

  • Ensuring Riverside Ward is optimally staffed (both for safety and productivity).
  • To be jointly responsible for the maintenance of computerised patient records on Cerner
  • To be responsible for the nursing and non-pay budget.
  • To be accountable for stock control, ordering and purchase of consumable and necessary equipment with budgetary limits pertaining to remit of management responsibility.
  • To be responsible for daily operational performance monitoring of the external contractor for decontamination services, and escalate matters impacting onto patient quality and/or service delivery.
  • Likewise to be responsible for any internal local decontamination processes and associated documentation ensuring that both are compliant with national guidelines of best practice.
  • To assist in the resolution of any conflicts within the clinical area, resolving informal complaints locally and assisting in the investigation of and response to formal complaints as required
  • To investigate accidents and incidents; identify and implement corrective action where necessary, in conjunction with the Lead Nurse and the leadership teams in breast and audiology.
  • To ensure there is an effective and efficient use of resources within the clinical areas.
  • To be responsible for the collection, analysis and reporting of activity related data.
  • To ensure that patients follow agreed pathways of care and are supported from arrival in department and onwards till safe and effective discharge from recovery.
