Job summary
This is a rare and exciting opportunity to be part of, and lead, an exceptional IPC and AMS service. This is a full 10PA consultant post, with the exact job plan dependant on the clinical background of the successful candidate.
As part of the senior IPC leadership team, you will support all areas of IPC practice, liaising closely with other infection experts and divisional colleagues. Your work will span the entire organisation, across all Trust sites, with a multitude of opportunities to learn as well as lead. The IPC team work closely with teams across Northwest London and there is opportunity to collaborate with other sector organisations.
Whilst this post is not immediately aligned to any specific research project the post holder will join a team with a strong research focus through its links with Imperial College London and the Clinical Trials Centre as an Academic Health Sciences Centre.
The Microbiology on-call roster will be offered to the successful applicant (on a 1:8 basis). The expectation is for 6hrs on-site work at weekends. This is remunerated as paid time off in lieu (approximately 1 day per month) added to annual leave entitlement.
Any applicant who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be involved with all elements of the current IPC work programme and help shape the design of future programmes.
The ICD will provide clinical leadership to a multidisciplinary team of registered nurses, pharmacists, managers, IPC practitioners, data analysts. They will also provide support to the Vascular Access service that are embedded in the IPC team.
The Trust is to be fully compliant with the National Infection Prevention and Control Manual and Code of Practice for IPC by March 2024. The ICD will lead elements of this work to ensure that this is delivered on time and to the required standard.
The ICD will respond to events involving infectious patients including outbreak management. They will be part of the expert group that manage individual cases and outbreaks, attending outbreak meetings, performing epidemiological analyses to support investigations and interpreting molecular typing results.
As part of the antimicrobial stewardship element, they will review antimicrobial resistance profiles and advise on policy changes accordingly. They will measure the consumption of antibiotics to identify areas of high usage for focussed attention with a view to reducing unnecessary use of antibiotics as well as investigate and report cases where antibiotic usage has been inappropriate and may have resulted in patient harm (for example, C. difficile infection).
