North West London Pathology (NWLP) is an NHS pathology partnership joint venture between Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, Chelsea & Westminster NHS Foundation Trust and The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. NWLP is modelled as a shared services organisation jointly owned by the three Trusts. The organisation is hosted by Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and as the legal entity for NWLP our staff are employed by Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
NWLP is based on a 'hub and spoke' structure; centralised at our hub site at Charing Cross Hospital The hub laboratory operates a 12 hour day and 6-day week to provide a responsive and effective service to our patients.
Cellular pathology is ISO15189 (UKAS) accredited. The hub is located in a purpose-built laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment, full sample tracking; voice recognition reporting and scientist led dissection. There is an extensive immunocytochemistry service, Electron Microscopy and Specialist Integrated Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service.
Implementation of digital slide scanning for histology cases is in progress. The laboratory service operates a 6-day working week with extended working days which has delivered significant improvement to the turnaround times. There is an on-going service re-design and improvement programme that has supported the team to be able to meet the current and future needs of the partner Trusts including faster diagnostic standards.
Main duties of the job
This recruitment is primarily covering the specialties of Skin, Gastroenterology and Head and Neck.
Posts are full time. There will be some flexibility to accommodate the successful candidate's specialty preferences and interest such as covering more than one specialty. Flexibility of job-shares / job plans will be considered.
Post holders will work as part of at least one specialty team, working closely with specialty leads. The Primary site of work is the Charing Cross Hospital. There may be an occasional requirement to visit other sites for MDTs. Colleague cross cover for annual and study leave is expected.
The department is UKAS accredited, all staff work as part of the specialty teams and the wider Cellular Pathology service complying with and supporting the Quality Management System. Turnaround times, workload and quality is monitored for all staff. Weekly data is shared within the specialty teams. TATs and key performance indicators are from sample collection to report completion. Unexpected findings or expected delayed need to be communicated to the clinical teams indicating expected timescales.
Digital slide scanning / reporting is being implemented for all specialties. Engagement in the improvement programme is expected. There is a scientist-led dissection service and the frozen section service is fully digital (both at the hub and spoke sites). Consultants support teaching and training for scientific and junior medical staff.

We are a major training centre for pathologists in training and currently have 22 trainees. There is a team of Expert Dissection and Trainee Reporting Scientists who support the consultants and junior doctors.
