Job summary

Applications are invited for a Clinical Fellow in Bariatric Surgery post based at the St Mary's Hospital campus of Imperial College. The post is available until October 2024.

The bariatric service has recently been designated preferred provider status by London and the South East Coast Specialised Commissioning Consortium and an International Centre of Excellence for bariatric surgery by the Surgical Review Corporation. The appointment is being made to offer superlative training in this high profile service.

The bariatric surgical service is an integral part of the upper GI strategic direction of the Clinical Programme Group in Cancer and Surgery.

The appointee will actively participate in the academic activities in metabolic medicine and surgical management of diabetes.

The appointee will become expected to be involved with on-going research programmes across Surgery, Medicine and Investigative Sciences.

The appointee will be expected to participate in the Department's undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programme.

The appointee should be accredited in General Surgery and should preferably hold a higher degree (MD (Res), MD , MS or PhD ) or equivalent. He/she should also be proficient and experienced in general and laparoscopic surgical procedures (cholecystectomy, appendecectomy and hernias as well as emergency surgery).

Main duties of the job

The fellow will divide his/her time between clinical work, inpatient and outpatients.

  1. Work alongside current GI surgery team of 8 SpRs, 4 SHO and 5 PRHOs
  2. Normal daytime working
  3. Provide daytime cover for bariatric surgical emergency admissions
  4. Provide support for the bariatric surgical emergency admissions out of hours via telephone
  5. Participate in the general surgical on-call rota at SpR level(1 in 9 daytime and weekends)

Training opportunities and study leave allowance is identical to those in approved posts (at equivalent grade).
