Job summary

We are looking to recruit a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join the Health Advising Team at Sexual Health Hounslow as a Band 6 Sexual Health Adviser. We are looking for someone who is motivated, enthusiastic and possesses excellent interpersonal and communication skills along with the ability to work with a diverse range of clients and stakeholders to manage the day to day running of the Chlamydia Screening Programmes (CSP) and C-Card Condom Distribution Scheme (CDS) and contribute to the on-going development of the two schemes as well as being a clinic based Sexual Health Advisor. Flexible working is required across several sites in the borough.

Main duties of the job

  • To support the Senior Sexual Health Adviser in operationally managing the day to day running of the Chlamydia Screening Programmes (CSP) and C-Card Condom Distribution Scheme (CDS) and contribute to the on-going development of the two schemes.
  • To participate in the implementation and monitoring of the service user pathway and provider training pathway for the two schemes.
  • To participate in the management of positive chlamydia and/or gonorrhoea results through the CSP scheme including seeing individuals to provide health promotion/risk reduction information and advice, partner notification, signposting and administering treatment for uncomplicated asymptomatic chlamydia and LGV.
  • To work with the Sexual Health Hounslow Business Manager to ensure data collection and reporting for the two schemes.
  • To undertake general Health Advisor duties as required including providing health adviser cover during clinics and supporting the Senior Health Adviser Assistant and Health Adviser Assistant with results management and patient queries.
  • To work with the Senior Health Adviser to take on specific outreach projects or development work to address identified needs and target populations.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Practice

  • To participate in the management of positive chlamydia and/or gonorrhoea results through the CSP scheme.
  • To facilitate the recall of clients with untreated infections or those in need of follow-up and/or test of cure by telephone, letter or in person.
  • Provide information and health education to clients diagnosed with sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, providing support and onward referral as required.
  • To manage the process of partner notification/management for these clients in order to encourage, with the clients consent, the attendance of all potentially infected sexual contacts to a Sexual Health clinic
  • To provide time limited 1:1 work for clients specifically around risk reduction and behaviour change, using evidenced based tools such as Motivational Interviewing and Behavioural Change models. Assessing all factors which might negatively affect a clients sexual health and referring to appropriate specialist services e.g. Psychology/Psychiatry & Alcohol & Drug services
  • Ensure at all times that the clients identity and the confidential nature of the information obtained is respected in accordance with the Sexually Transmitted Disease Regulations of 1974 and the NHS VD directive of 1991, within clinic, outreach and off site services
  • Provide initial crisis intervention, assessment and appropriate referral for those clients attending the clinic with associated problems, e.g. termination of pregnancy, sexual identity, sexual assault, substance misuse and sexual dysfunction.
  • Offer information and support, to deal with enquiries from, both the general public and health professionals about Sexually Transmitted Infections, including HIV and managing clients who present with health anxiety; assessing and referring as appropriate.
  • To be competent in the management of under 16 year olds and vulnerable adults working within Fraser Guidelines and liaising with the multi-disciplinary team, safeguarding professionals both within the Trust and outside and Child Protection Services as appropriate.
  • To take sexual histories from clients as appropriate and refer on to relevant individuals in the multi professional team as part of the care pathway.
  • To undertake training as per Trust guidelines and in line with the individuals professional qualification to either dispense/supply or prescribe medication such as Azithromycin, PEPSE/ PrEP or vaccinations as part of the patients care pathway and to participate with pharmacy in regularly auditing this.
  • To conduct Point of Care HIV testing in accordance with Trust and Directorate guidelines following training and assessment of competency.
  • To be able to perform phlebotomy as required in accordance with Trust and Directorate guidelines following training and assessment of competency.
  • To be able to administer treatment for uncomplicated chlamydia/LGV as required in accordance with Trust and Directorate guidelines following training and assessment of competency.
  • Maintain accurate client records, ensuring all entries are dated, signed and designation recorded as in accordance with the Trusts policies and procedures.
  • To undertake general Health Adviser duties as required including covering clinics during Health Adviser absence.
  • Assist in maintaining high standards of care through creating a caring and therapeutic Environment.
