Job responsibilities

Clinical:

To use specialist knowledge and skills in HIV/Sexual Health to independently manage total episodes of patient care to a level that is expected of a band 6 nurse whilst remaining within their own scope of professional practice.

Maintain good understanding and implementation of clinical escalation procedures as required.

To be able to manage Safeguarding issues in clinic, making appropriate follow up/referrals, and seeking advice and support when needed.

Provide clinical guidance and specialist advice to junior members of the team and act as a role model for advanced practice.

To supply and administer medicines under Patient Group Directions (or as a non-medical prescriber) for sexual health/HIV and contraception patients

Ensure the safe custody, maintenance and administration of medication in accordance with established Trust policy.

Promote good practice and adopt a holistic approach to patient care at all times

Leadership and management:

Be a shift coordinator where appropriate.

Ensure staff adhere to Trust protocols of care, e.g. Infection Control.

Lead, mentor and support in the management of their own clinical mentees.

Develop and maintain effective communication and working relationships with other professional groups, and staff members within the Division and the Trust.

Contribute to the effective management of the area by ensuring correct levels of staff are in place to deliver and assist with the planning of off duty rotas.

Assist in the delivery of induction / orientation of new staff

Act as a role model, ensuring staff work to Trust guidelines and values.

Supervise, under the direction of their manager, the work of qualified and unqualified staff and learners.

Provide clinical support and guidance to staff.

Education & research:

Participate in the education of all learners within their area.

Actively support and assist in preceptorship and in pre-registration student support, supervision and guidance including mentorship where appropriate.

Identify and respond to learning needs for area.

Develop and deliver or organise local training sessions, mindful of the Trust values.

Facilitate others in the development of informal teaching skills.

Participate in the annual training needs analysis for their area.

Participate in any local or related research projects, clinical trials etc.

Apply and encourage others to utilise evidence based practice and relevant research findings in practice

Identify areas of nursing / midwifery research within their area that will be of benefit, and encourage and educate other staff to recognise the importance of research.

Professional Responsibilities

To ensure communications with patients and their relatives are supportive and informative with due regard to confidentiality.

To be responsible for and demonstrate ones personal and professional development and maintain up to date clinical skills including all relevant mandatory training.

Participate in their own appraisal using reflective practice.

To be aware of their responsibilities and work in accordance with the Nursing & Midwifery Councils (NMC)s Code of Professional Conduct.

Collaborate with senior nurses and medical team appropriately for professional support and guidance.

Actively participate in team meetings.

Promote and maintain a safe therapeutic environment for patients, their families and staff, according to national and local Infection Control guidelines, Health & Safety legislation and Trust policies and objectives.

Understand the Trust clinical governance framework, and participate in the promoting and safeguarding of high standards of care, through effective risk management & governance, and adherence to the Trust values.

Monitor quality of standards of care, in line with CQC requirements and Trust and Divisional objectives.

Contribute to evidence based practice and research projects within the clinical areas and ensure that written standards for clinical care are formulated, utilised and reviewed regularly and as necessary.

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

• Relevant post registration sexual health/ HIV experience at Band 5 level
• Wide variety of clinical experience in either or both of these fields
• Evidence of management experience of junior staff.
• Experience of excellence in leading all /part of a clinical team in practice
• Experience of teaching and supporting students / new staff
• Experience of teaching and supporting students / new staff
• Experience of working with staff from different professional disciplines

Desirable

• Sexual Health experience

Skills

Essential

• Current experience as either a sexual health (GU/FP) nurse alternatively current experience in a HIV inpatient or outpatient setting
• Venepuncture / delivery of IM injections
• Excellent communication skills with patients, relatives, staff and external contacts, including in challenging situations, demonstrating respect and kindness.
• Demonstrates the ability to interpret and utilise numerical and financial information
• Experience of data
• Proven leadership and deputising skills in clinical area
• Proven knowledge of safety issues through clinical governance and risk management
