Job summary

The Unit Manager will be a clearly identifiable senior clinical unit manager and team leader. They will have significant clinical experience and provide clinical expertise to their team, co-ordinate and deliver high quality care. They will be a role model for expert clinical care and lead on specific projects/ management functions as designated by the Senior Nurse.

They will also be responsible for providing leadership and operational management of the neonatal clinical areas and the professional development of the staff within those areas. The Sister/Charge Nurse will provide support to all staff and will be required to work in partnership with all multi-disciplinary teams.

They will work with the other neonatal senior nurses to develop best practice and ensure that there is consistency across both sites. In collaboration with the relevant senior nursing team and Modern Matrons, they will be required to provide senior nursing cover for paediatric unit.

In the specialist setting, they will be expected to have a significant level of specialist neonatal clinical knowledge and expertise in Neonatal care delivery.

The role has clinical, teaching, managerial and staff development responsibilities as delegated by the Modern Matron with particular emphasis on developing clinical expertise.

Main duties of the job

Be responsible for providing a 24 hour nursing service for the clinical area demonstrating effective leadership and management skills.

Maintain a safe working environment, recognising the health and safety

requirements of patients, learners, staff and visitors within the area, and undertaking risk assessment and management on a shift basis.

To effectively manage the allocated budget ensuring that any actual or predicted overspends are reported and investigated. You will also be expected to deliver savings and efficiencies in line with the trust's objectives.

To identify and investigate any issues of conduct, discipline and performance within the team in accordance with trust policy and to liaise with the designated Modern Matron and HR team.

To develop ward/unit policies and guidelines and to ensure these are implemented and audited to ensure compliance and best practice.

To participate in the organisation and management of any service change and project development in the clinical areas.

participate/lead in the development of Ward/Department policies and guidelines and ensure these are readily communicated to all staff.

participate/lead in the investigation of complaints,

lead the recruitment and retention of staff and report any problems to the Neonatal Matron.

familiar with the Trust and Divisional objectives, ensure key performance indicators are met in particular in relation to 'saving lives' and staff individual performance reviews.
