Job summary

To work as a prime care provider in all aspects of midwifery care working on a 24 hour rotational basis throughout all clinical areas of the maternity unit/Community midwifery service. To lead and deputise for the ward co-ordinator where applicable. To support junior midwifery, medical and support staff in caring for families throughout the service.

Work autonomously and with the Multidisciplinary team to deliver high standards of individualised evidence based care to mothers and their families in pregnancy, labour, birth and postnatally to the woman, her partner and their baby.

Promote and empower personalisation and choice of care and birth.

Main duties of the job

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Work in partnership with the client, GP, obstetrician and other agencies to ensure optimum care.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care of mothers and babies in accordance with the Trusts policies and guidelines.
  • Strive for continuity of care, continuity of carer and informed client choice within the limitations of the service.
  • Facilitate the learning of midwifery skills through supervision, teaching and support.
  • Actively promote and encourage a healthy lifestyle, advising and arranging support for women as required.
  • Participate in educating parents in preparation for parenthood.
  • Teach and support junior staff and students in developing competent skills and knowledge.
  • Act as a Mentor student midwives

Clinical Practice:

Practice, maintain and teach advanced clinical skills to appropriate staff groups e.g. student midwives and junior colleagues, whether in the maternity unit, birth centre or at home. This includes advancedlife support, neonatal resuscitation, and appropriate to the clinical area dealing with complex obstetric cases, suturing, siting of I.V infusions and other procedures required in the care of high-risk women.

  • Facilitate the learning of midwifery skills through supporting /supervising students and junior medical staff.
  • Support women in achieving a normal birth where possible by accommodating their needs and wishes and by empowering them and take responsibility for their care.
  • Support physiological birth where applicable, ensuring safe, personalised care.
  • Ensure quality standards are met.
  • Interpret clinical findings and advise on the appropriate management pathway.
  • Influence policy through setting, monitoring and reviewing standards and procedures within the clinical governance framework.
  • Participate in audit programmes in line with service development and needs.
  • Maintain up to date professional knowledge, which is demonstrated through clinical practice.

Organisational and Professional Development:

  • Identify own development needs and actively work towards own professional development.
