A wonderful opportunity has arisen at Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust for a passionate and inspiring experienced Midwife, to join our team as The Cultural Safety Specialist Midwife at the Trust.

We are looking for someone with excellent interpersonal skills, who is a motivational leader and is not afraid of change.

The successful candidate will have a remit to support the maternity leadership team to assess, review and identify ways of reducing health inequalities within the local maternity population. Similarly, they will work with the Trust equality, diversity and inclusion team and with maternity leaders to understand and develop strategies to improve the employment experiences of marginalised staff.

They will use strong analytical and innovation skills to plan new ways of working and support the implementation of these.

They will also work directly with clients on improving patient experience for marginalised groups, which is intrinsically linked to safe care and successful engagement from our communities.

Main duties of the job

  • Demonstrate knowledge of all relevant policies and legislation in relation to equality, diversity and inclusion within the context of national governance policies and procedures.
  • Work with the senior midwifery team and LMNS team to assist in the implementation and operationalisation of all current and future policies and strategic directions with a cultural safety focus.
  • To work alongside hospital and community teams and senior midwifery staff to review midwifery practice and provide an expert opinion in maternity care, particularly focused on inclusivity.
  • To use key performance indicators (WRES and birth outcome data) to demonstrate ongoing added value of the role of Cultural Safety Lead.
  • Be involved in continuous monitoring and maintaining quality standards of clinical practice and care through a variety of ways, for example, audit.
  • To be responsible for the delivery of the LMNS equity and equality strategy.

  • To focus on implementation, delivery and evaluation of the Cultural Safety training package.
  • To provide support, information and identification of key issues and themes to feed into the training programmes for maternity staff including Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic, LGBTQ+ people and people living with disability outcomes, health inequalities and the role of cultural competence and unconscious bias.

  • Registered Midwife
  • First level degree in related healthcare discipline or substantial experiential equivalence
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Completion of relevant cultural safety training in relation to anti-racism, LGBT+ issues and/or disability issues

Desirable

  • PMA
  • Leadership qualifications and or experience
  • Post-graduate management /leadership qualification or equivalent level of knowledge gained through experience

  • Substantial post registration experience
  • Experience of working with diverse groups of women
  • Good understanding of MBRRACE-UK report
  • Up to date and evidence based knowledge of current professional issues related to marginalised women and health inequalitiesn-depth understanding of the national maternity safety agenda
