Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Education team at Chelsea and Westminster and West Middlesex Maternity Service as the Lead Midwife for International Recruitment and Pastoral Support.
The successful post holder will provide pastoral care and offer support to international midwives within the trust and play a key role in supporting their orientation during their initial arrival period, and lead on their induction to the clinical area.

Main duties of the job
- To provide pastoral care and offer support to the internationally educated midwives within the trust.
- Play a key role in supporting the orientation of international midwives during the initial arrivals period and lead on induction to clinical area.
- Be a central contact for the midwives to seek signposting for support on a variety of areas such as wellbeing, accommodation, amenities, local community contacts and their spiritual care.
- Act as a supportive link between the midwives and the designated ward areas to ensure a smooth supportive induction period.
- Ensuring the designated ward areas has identified a preceptor to facilitate support and ensure buddy system in place.
- Form good working relations with key team members and wider organisational colleagues to enable quality pastoral support provision including International recruitment lead, practice and development , OSCE lead, spiritual care lead , BAME networks , Occupational health, clinical managers , matrons & their teams and Human Resources.
- To work hands in maternity with overseas recruits to ensure clinical competence and cultural induction

Pastoral Support
- Develop and implement a buddying peer support system from previously recruited overseas midwives for initial arrival of midwifes, benefiting in reducing anxieties and allaying fears and assisting with orientation and integration.
- Ensuring a buddying /mentoring system is also in place in the clinical setting and liaising with managers ensuring on boarding and orientation to clinical areas.
- Arrange virtual and face to face social gatherings to support welcome the recruits to the Trust; ensure the development of friendships amongst international recruits, buddies and other staff who wish to participate.
- Providing virtual support whilst in isolation and quarantine including weekend wellbeing calls check if required
Clinical orientation
- To work alongside overseas midwives clinically during their induction programme ensuring competency in the following areas.
- To support the internationally recruited midwives to complete the clinical competence book
- To ensure staff are oriented to culture in the UK including choice and body autonomy.
Retention of Staff
- To support talent management and career advancement of overseas midwifery staff, promoting the internal transfer scheme and signposting to coaching and interview skills support and further educational opportunities.
- Conduct career conversations, signposting staff with career planning, goal setting and development.
- Promote internal transfers and assist facilitation of cross site shadowing in specialist areas
- Regular review of the preceptorship programme in conjunction with Learning and Development ensuring it meets the needs of the international midwives.
Team management
- To work in close collaboration with HR and the Corporate Nursing Team to provide high quality information and resource, supporting the recruitment and retention of nursing and midwifery staff across the Trust.
- To promote the Trusts policies on Equality and Diversity
- Benchmark and establish processes to continuously improve recruitment services and products to enhance their value to the organisation and to ensure excellence in service delivery.
