Paediatric Staff Nurse Burns Care Band 5

The Paediatric Burns Unit at Chelsea and Westminster are looking for an enthusiastic Band 5 Paediatric Nurse to join their team. Mars Ward is the only Paediatric Burns Unit in London, and treats thousands of children every year. It is a 6 bedded unit, with one HDU bed, accepting children with up to 30% partial thickness burn injuries. There is also a nurse-led dressing clinic adjacent to the ward, seeing up to 30 patients per day. The unit is run by a small, friendly team of Paediatric Nurses, working closely with the burns Consultants , Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists and Play Specialist.

Main duties of the job

To maintain a high standard of nursing care for the children and their families while developing clinical expertise, leadership and teaching through nursing practice. To take day to day responsibility for a group of patients.

To be responsible for the assessment of patient care needs and development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care without supervision.

This post primarily involves the individual both consolidating existing skills and knowledge as well as developing their expertise within the speciality of Burns including HDU and dressing clinic. It includes the opportunity to continue to develop organisational and management skills within the Burns speciality.

1. Clinical:

1.1 Carry out all relevant forms of care for a group of children. Without supervision, as part of the wider team. Ensuring that high standards of care are promoted.

1.2 Ensure a child and family centred philosophy is maintained.

1.3 Facilitate the delivery of a quality, patient focused burns service, ensuring good communication /collaboration with all members of the multi disciplinary team, patients and relatives. This includes documenting relevant and accurate information within the electronic patient record.

1.4 Participate in teaching and share knowledge and expertise with other staff including supervision of new and support staff.

1.5 Act as a childs advocate.

1.6 To role model best practice to other staff.

1.7 Be aware of clinical developments with in paediatric nursing and burns care.

1.8 Participate in the collection of information within the service that will assist in the development and monitoring of quality care measures.

1.9 Ensure that professional standards are maintained in accordance with the NMC code of professional conduct

2. Leadership and management

2.1 To meet the responsibilities of being both a member of the multi disciplinary team and a member of the burns unit staff

2.2 Maintain a safe working environment recognising the health and safety requirements of patients, visitors and staff.

2.3 Recognise the importance of maintaining an environment suitable for the developmental needs of children of all relevant age groups.

2.4 Assist the ward manager in the monitoring of staffing requirements, applying knowledge of skill mix, dependency and unit staff members and other staff allocated to the team.

2.5 Ensure all incidents and a complaints are communicated with the nurse in charge.

2.6 Work within policies and procedures ratified within the trust and Service. Become familiar with new policies and procedures and know how to access them as required.

2.7 Assist in the management of resources within the clinical area e.g. equipment and supplies.

2.8 Maintain a safe and acceptable environment for patients, reporting and taking appropriate action on any hazards, incidents, faulty equipment or inadequate standards of cleaning

3.1 Critically evaluate own performance through annual Individual Performance Review.

3.2 Plan and pursue own professional development including keeping a personal development profile.

3.3 Be involved in any research based projects which may be undertaken within the burns service.

3.5 Assist in the orientation of newly appointed staff and learners to the area.
