Healthcare Assistant - Paediatric Burns Unit Band 3
The Paediatric Burns Unit are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated healthcare assistant to join our team.
Mars Ward is the only Paediatric Burns Unit in London, and treats thousands of children every year. We have six beds, including HDU level care, accepting children with up to 30% partial thickness burn injuries or up to 20% deep burn injuries. We see many outpatients every day, attending the ward for dressing changes with opiate analgesia, or attending our nurse led dressing clinic adjacent to the ward which treats up to 25 patients per day.
The unit is run by a small, friendly team of Paediatric Nurses, working closely with the burns Consultants , Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists and Play Specialist.

Main duties of the job
The HCA is responsible for the support to the Nursing team on daily basis - to ensure a safe delivery of high quality patient care, whilst working in close co-operation and collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team.
Provide high quality clinical care support to patients, in line with the Trust values and in accordance with professional regulations.
Accept delegated responsibility for specific activities/areas from the senior nurse in charge of the burns unit/and the unit coordinator.
Work in line with Trust policies, objectives, protocols and local guidelines, whilst also being aware of the importance of their role in supporting members of the team, and always adhering to the Trust values, and in accordance with NMC regulations.
Work autonomously in areas that have been deemed competent, and with others, to always deliver high standards of care to patients and their carers, autonomously and as part of a team.
Communicate in line with Trust values, to patients, carers and staff at all times.
Take every opportunity to continue to develop, practice and expand their own general and specialist nursing skills.
Maintain high standards of professional and ethical responsibility, and accountability and be aware of the medico-legal aspects of nursing, in line with professional, regulating and local guidance

1. Clinical
- Support the nurse in charge of burns to assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualized patient care through appropriate frameworks, including safe effective arrangements for dressing change preparation and instruments for each surgical case.
- Assist members of the team in the co-ordination of the clinical activities
- Support the team to use clinical standards to participate in the process of monitoring the quality of care delivered. Act to ensure that care delivery is of the highest standard, in line with Trust and CQC standards.
- Support the practical knowledge and skills in the education of the junior staff or student nurse in burns.
- Escalate appropriately after safe evaluation of care and initiate any action required, for example liaising with the multidisciplinary team of senior nurses, managers and surgeon.
- Undertake any reasonable and relevant clinical or non-clinical functions commensurate with their banding.
- Recognise and act on situations that may be detrimental to the health and well-being of the individual
- Support other members of the caring team who may be responsible for implementing specific aspects of nursing care throughout each burns list.
- Use of the Datix online to report accidents, incidents and losses and provide initial support for the member of staff or patient involved, in line with Trust policy.
- Take on extra duties/responsibilities as delegated and agreed by the department/ ward manager or senior staff nurse, within their capability / limitations

- Be responsible for, and demonstrate personal professional development, maintain up to date clinical skills and ensure mandatory training is always current.

- Participate in burns team and ward meetings.
- Participate in established local projects and clinical audit in burns such as the changes in fasting policy and specimen protocol.

- Work in a supportive way with learners and HCAS/MSWs, providing knowledge and feedback as required.
- Participate in local teaching sessions one to one with junior HCAs.

- Demonstrate effective time management and prioritization of workload when working with busy burns lists. Always preparing trollies in advance where applicable.
- Take an active role in the induction and orientation of new staff in the unit.
- Take responsibility for the teaching and education of pre and post registration students acting as a supportive buddy as appropriate.
- Demonstrate teaching skills in the supervision development and feedback of junior staff
- Demonstrate procedures and supervise junior staff and students in the practice of new skills.
- Have an awareness of cost implications and assist in the management of resources within the clinical area e.g. equipment, supplies
- Communication and relationship building
- Know and utilize Trust values in all working relationships to patients, carers and staff.
