Physician's Associate - Emergency & General Surgery, Band 7
Fixed-Term: 12 months due to funding
Following the successful introduction of Physician Associates into the Emergency Surgery team, applications are invited for a Physician's Associate (PA) in Emergency, General Surgery & Urology based at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. The successful candidates will work within the wider general surgical team, and be involved in both elective and emergency work.

Main duties of the job
The role will include working within a busy, dynamic and friendly department and the PA will be exposed to a wide variety of different elective and emergency cases. Patients will be under a number of different specialties, not limited to emergency surgery, colorectal, urology, upper GI and others. We encourage a leaning environment and also encourage your involvement in audit and research and expect the successful candidate to present and publish such work carried out in the Unit.

- To improve the efficiency of the emergency general surgery team and support the emergency surgery pathways and clinical workload
- To assess, clerk and review patients that are referred to surgery via the Emergency Department or General Practice
- To participate, and lead where appropriate, in ward rounds
- To perform and assist with practical procedures such as venepuncture, cannulas, blood gases, urinary catheters, incision and drainage, and support the booking of procedures and investigations as appropriate
- To participate in multidisciplinary meetings
- To support our general surgical colleagues by identifying and referring suitable patients for review in the Surgical Same Day Emergency Care unit
- To facilitate the safe and timely discharge of patients
- To contribute to the achievement and maintenance of key performance indicators
- To act as a consistent member of the team and to help in handover processes and continuity of care for our patients
- To participate in teaching and quality improvement projects developing and embedding new and innovative practices and policies

- Be on the voluntary register of the Faculty of Physician Associate
