Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity for a Ward Manager on the Acute Assessment Unit at Chelsea and Westminster hospital.
The Acute Admissions Unit is a 54 bedded ward, included in this is a 9 bedded enhanced care area equipped to provide care for patients needing level 1 care. The ward specialises in the care of acute medical patients who are being admitted through the Emergency Department.
The ward works closely with the Emergency Department to support the admissions of emergency patients as well as the inpatient wards in the hospital to provide level 1 care for patients who have a clinical deterioration and their needs cannot be met on an inpatient ward. The patient's admission on the ward should be no longer than 72 hours. If the patient care is expected to exceed this they will be transferred to an inpatient ward for ongoing care.
The enhanced care area is comprised of 9 beds including 1 side room. Staff are trained to provide care to patients with single organ failure. This includes non-invasive ventilation, high flow oxygen, complex infusions and cardiac monitoring. The Enhanced Care area has a dedicated team of Doctors led by Consultant daily to treat the patients and we are supported by specialist respiratory physiotherapists. The team treat patients from all specialities and will liaise with the patient's teams to provide care. We also care for patients awaiting cardiac interventions who require cardiac monitoring until the treatment has been completed.
Main duties of the job
Key Responsibilities:
o In collaboration with the Modern Matron, service manager & clinicians, the Ward Sister/Charge nurse is responsible for the effective delivery of care given to patients within the clinical area.
o To provide professional leadership within the clinical area.
o To have 24-hr responsibility for clinical area.
o To deliver care in accordance with the NMC Code of Practice/Scope of Professional Practice and the Trust's policies and protocols.
o To ensure the safety of patients in accordance with local and national safeguarding procedures.
o The post holder will provide expert advice and take a lead in the development and implementation of shared practice protocols in line with national recommendations and standards where these are available.
o To lead a daily multidisciplinary meeting to ensure all patients have all patients have a clear treatment and discharge plan.
o To reduce length of stay for patients ensuring timely pathways to support highest standard of care are in place.
o To achieve financial balance
o Assess staff performance and sickness, set up action plans and complete return to work interviews ensuring all documentation is completed.

The ward is supported by a wide Multidisciplinary team including an acute therapy team who assess patients on the ward with the aim of assessing needs for packages of care or on-going therapy needs for the community to facilitate a timely discharge, frailty team who assess our frail patients and provide a robust plan of care for patients and discharge plan for on-going support of patients conditions and the Integrated Discharge Hub who support us to manage complex discharges and communicate with our community partners. We have a wide range of Specialist Nurses who assess our patients and help to plan individualised care for our patients. Each professional brings their specialised knowledge to ensure a holistic approach to each patient.
A daily multi-disciplinary meeting takes place every day with Medical, Nursing, Site Managers, Therapy team, Frailty team and the Integrated Discharge team being present to support the care and discharge of patients. The Ward Manager is critical in this meeting to ensure that patients have estimated dates of discharge to enable all teams to clearly work towards this.
Staff on the ward are dedicated to provide high quality care and have successfully initiated several improvement projects to improve patient safety, including the introduction of portering team to support the transfers of patients and housekeeper.
