Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Physician Associate who wishes to work within the department of Acute Medicine.

This is a great opportunity to improve focused history-taking/examination skills, and arranging investigations/ management plans. All areas are very well supervised and supported by senior clinicians and trainers.

You will gain experience of being on the Acute Medicine Unit (AMU), our enhanced care area and in ambulatory emergency care (AEC) - seeing patients referred by the Emergency Department and GPs.

This is a great opportunity to work with a well led and integrated team, in a multidisciplinary Acute Medical Unit with a wealth of experience in both training and working alongside Physician Associates.

Main duties of the job

Our priorities within Acute Medicine are in accordance with the Trust priorities, and these include:

  • To provide excellent urgent and emergency care
  • To provide planned care such as Ambulatory care and Hot clinics in a way that's safe and efficient for patients
  • To ensure that the research work we do translates from the bench to the bedside
  • To make sure that our team have the right skills and experience through high quality multi professional training
  • To be innovative in our service design, using data to drive forward change

Job responsibilities

  • To improve the efficiency of the acute medicine team and support the acute medical pathways and clinical workload
  • To assess, clerk and review patients that are referred to medicine via the Emergency Department or General Practice
  • To participate, and lead where appropriate, in ward rounds
  • To perform and assist with practical procedures such as venepuncture, cannulas, blood gases, urinary catheters, paracentesis, pleural procedures, lumbar punctures, and support the booking of procedures and investigations as appropriate
  • To participate in multidisciplinary meetings
  • To support our medical specialty colleagues by identifying and referring suitable patients for review on the Acute Assessment Unit
  • To facilitate the safe and timely discharge of medical patients
  • To contribute to the achievement and maintenance of key acute medical performance indicators
  • To act as a consistent member of the medical team and to help in handover processes and continuity of care for our patients
  • To participate in teaching and quality improvement projects developing and embedding new and innovative practices and policies
